Twelve Tone Canon No. 3 - Downward Spiral Canon

Показать описание
A consonant, 2 part spiral 12 tone canon.
The canon completes in measure 14, and both voices are repeated one half step lower than where they began.
The only form of the row in this canon is the Prime, and every instance is labeled in the score.

This is another experiment in generating (somewhat) consonant music using the 12 tone serial composition method created by Arnold Schoenberg.
Many distinguished composers and critics claim that the method only generates soulless, unintelligible sounds, not meaningful music. On the other hand, many composers do not put any effort into 12 tone compositions, assuming that using the row automatically gives intelligible order and meaning.

The point of these exercises is to show that the method is capable of intelligible music, but that work is needed on the part of the composer.

Disclaimer 1: I make no claim that the music in this video is 'beautiful' or employs great art, only that the music is consonant.

Disclaimer 2: I am aware that strict 12 tone serial music utilizes only one instance of a row simultaneously. In the case of strict imitation, multiple instances are allowed.

Excellent! I think it is uncommon to find in works of multiple instruments the use of one row simultaneously. I mean hearing the mature string quartets of Schoenberg you hear him using transpositions of the primary row --- although not in bold imitation as you do. Or maybe I misunderstand your second disclaimer?
