In this video, we quickly explore Bishops Palace, Immaculate Conception Church, Basilica of Bom Jesus, Church and Convent of Francis of Assisi, Sé Cathedral, and St. Augustine Tower.
Bishops Palace:
Built around 1894, The Bishops Palace/Archbishop's house is the residence of the Archbishop of Goa.
Situated in the Altinho hill, overlooking the city of Panaji.
This has been home to five Portuguese archbishops, two Goan archbishops.
Pope John Paul II had stayed here for 3 days during his 1986 India visit.
Immaculate Conception Church:
This colonial Portuguese Baroque style church first built in 1541 as a chapel, replaced by a larger(present) church in 1609.
Symmetrical zigzag stairways were added in the 18th century.
Painted a bright white to signify the Immaculate Virgin Mary, This church is known as the ‘crown’ of Panjim as it can be seen from a great distance.
This church houses the ancient bell that was removed from the Augustinian ruins in the city of Old Goa.
This bell is considered to be the second-largest of its kind in Goa.
Basilica of Bom Jesus:
This church is part of the Churches and convents of Goa listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the 26 Basilicas in India.
Construction work on the church began in 1594 and completed in 1605.
In 1946, the Basilica of Bom Jesus became the first church in India to be elevated to the status of Minor Basilica.
Basilica of Bom Jesus has been built as per Baroque style, complete with curves and embellishments.
This church is very famous for the 450 years old sacred body of St. Francis Xavier preserved without any chemical formulas.
St Francis Xavier died on his voyage to China in 1552 and was buried there.
His body was brought to Goa after two years and placed in Basilica of Bom Jesus since 1637.
Public viewing of the body of St. Francis Xavier is held every ten years. This event attracts lakhs of pilgrims from around the globe.
St. Augustine Tower:
Church of St. Augustine is a ruined church complex located in Old Goa. The church was completed in 1602 and is part of the World Heritage Site, Churches and convents of Goa.
The church was abandoned in 1835, the body collapsed soon after and by 1871, the bell was moved from the tower to the Immaculate Conception Church at Panjim.
