there was a time when snowballs could hit players.

In Minecraft's early development stages, specifically:

*Indev (2009-2010)* and *Alpha (2010)* phases,

snowballs could be thrown at and damage players.

Here's a rough timeline:

1. *Indev 0.31 (January 29, 2009)*: Snowballs were introduced, and they could hit players.
2. *Alpha 1.0 (June 28, 2010)*: Snowballs still damaged players.

However, with the introduction of:

*Beta 1.8 (September 14, 2011)*,

snowballs no longer dealt damage to players.

This change aimed to:

1. Balance gameplay mechanics.
2. Make snowballs more of a novelty item.

Since then, snowballs have been used primarily for:

1. Decorations
2. Pvp-free fun
3. Redstone contraptions
