Man cooks meals in car during Arizona's heat

You probably heard the old saying, "It's so hot you can fry an egg on the sidewalk." Well, a Mesa man can do better than that.

Tucked away in a Mesa RV resort is Ricky Bennett who cooks up dinner on his dashboard several days a week.

Bennett moved to Mesa from New Hampshire. It didn't take long to realize that Arizona summers can be as hot as an oven.

He's trained as a meteorologist, an engineer, and now we can add an adventurous amateur chef to his resume.

"Well, it was a couple of years ago I got in my truck when it was over 110° in one day, and I was burning myself, everything I touched. It was just too hot," Bennett said.

He's just catching on. I moved to Arizona in 2015. The inside of my car got up to 122 degrees. I would bake Nestlé Tollhouse cookies on my dashboard while I was at work.
I had so much fun smelling the aroma of chocolate chip cookies & eating a snack while my car cooled off before driving home with oven mittens on! ❤❤

Had some friends who used to cook brisket that way... three days of prep, 8 hours in the truck while they were at work. Came out perfectly cooked and butter tender every time.

At least he’s not heating up his house now either. So that is a bonus.

Clever, tasty and also a very good reminder of what its like for pets, kids and adult, elderly people left in hot vehicals.

For anyone who doesn't have a vehicle, get a solar cooker, they are great for disaster situations too.

This dash cooking has been around for over 60 years that I know of. The Mexicans put their aluminum wrapped burritos on the dash to heat up for lunch at most constructions sites. Other people working other jobs heat up their food for lunch also. Back in the day dash boards were metal and cooked faster.

The news has done this every year for the past 50 years that I've lived in Phoenix. Nothing new at all. I do remember they did fry an egg on the sidewalk a few decades ago.

I spend a lot of time in a U-Pull-it yard. Last year, I found a thermometer in one of the cars. It was the kind they put in the AC vent to see how cold it's getting. I threw it in my tool box, and then remembered I had it a one day when it was around 90°. I put it on the dash of a car and it quickly rose to 145°. It was quite shocking. I never would have guessed it could be over 50% hotter inside the car. I knew it was hotter, but not that much. To be clear, it was only that hot right on the dashboard close to the windshield. The rest of the car was only around 110° to 115°. I don't remember the interior color, but I'm sure that would play a role in how hot it got. This is in NY. I can only imagine what it must be like in AZ.

Maybe get a solar grill rather than jeopardizing your vehicle 😂😂

We used to put gallon tea jars out in the Summer afternoons, but never a crockpot or casserole dish. Wow.
