Reverse Bids: Opener's Rebid/Breaking the Barrier

What is a reverse in bridge? The name is confusing and it can be more helpful to think in terms of 'breaking your barrier' when you are rebidding strong, unbalanced hands. The bids give partner an excellent description of the strength and shape of your holding, helping you to reach a good contract.

Thank you for your question. Yes, I agree - it’s certainly a problem if a 5-card suit is too weak to rebid, but with 2+ honours in the suit then I’m reasonably content to rebid it. If it’s any weaker, I’d want 6 cards for sure, so would be wary of opening with 5. As ever, it helps if opener and partner have the same understanding!

Excellent: clear, well structured explanation. Good pace. Thank you

Good explanation. However if you have a weak opening hand and can't reverse, and end up rebidding your opening suit, doesn't that imply holding 6 of that suit?
