Promises I Can't Keep | Lyrics

What's the difference between a man and a monster
Is it somewhere between “I can" and “I want to"
Is it somewhere between the promises I made
And the fact I couldn’t see something getting in the way
I used to think that I know what I want
Never saw it coming unglued
I used to think that I know what I want
Now it’s time to see if it’s true

I had so much certainty
Till that moment I lost control
And I’ve tried but it never was up to me
I’ve got no worse enemy
Than the fear of what’s still unknown
And the time’s come to realize there will be
Promises I can’t keep

What's the difference between a loss and a forfeit
I tried to make it better but I made it more sick
I tried to make it right / but now awake at night
I know reality was getting in the way
I used to think that I knew who I was
Never saw it coming unglued
I used to think that I knew who I was
Now it’s time to see if it’s true

This will be the first comment that I've ever left on Youtube. I'm a 48 year old school teacher, first responder, husband, and dad. I'm probably not Linkin Park or Mike's perceived audience. However, I have been a Linkin Park fan since the beginning. For almost a year after Chester's death, I couldn't listen to Linkin Park when they'd pop up on Pandora. I've been listening to Mike for the last hour or so while getting ready for a Parent Night at my high school. Mike, I don't know if this will ever get to you-- and I don't mean this to sound patronizing--but I'm proud of you. I know you've been through a lot, and you felt your whole world get upended around you. You came through this, and you found your voice. It is strong, and has a message that needs to be told. Consider me a "Mike Sinoda" fan from today on.

I hope people remember that although Chester, the voice of Linkin Park is gone, Mike, Brad, Joe, Rob and Dave are still here. The brains, hands, eyes and heart of the band is still here and speaking as a fan of this Band for a long time I feel that people owe them all the same love and respect as Chester ever received. They were more than just his brothers, they are also the creators of the band's philosophy that is shared by everyone who loved even one of their songs.

This is a far cry from the Mike Shinoda that labels wanted to drop back when they were going into the studio to record Hybrid Theory. Chester stood up for him, and odd 20 years later everybody's looking at Mike for support and the hope and dream to keep Linkin Park alive after Chester's passing. This shows not only the brotherhood these two friends had but also the fortitude and perseverance that made them one, if not the, biggest band on the planet come 2020.

I don't know if you manage your own channel or not Mike, but on the off chance you're reading this - the whole world still grieves with you. However equally as important, we all recognise the enormous talent you have always possessed and how you've taken an absolute tragedy and used it as a catalyst for creation, instead of further destruction.

Good luck in all your endeavours, i'll be here listening to it all.

Mike Shinoda is probably the most under appreciated artist of the last 20yrs. On top of that Mike Shinoda plays six instruments & flow with the best of them. Truly one of the best on the mic. #MikeShinoda

Only Mike can create music like this. He can do everything, rock, heavy metal, rap, singing, hip hop!

The best fact about this song is that it was almost fully written and produced by Mike Shinoda himself.

This is the main proof to say that Mike was always the gifted mind behind Linkin Park's success

This album shows what Mike had lost. We all are still hurting but have you ever asked yourself a question- Who was Chester for us? He was someone we admired from our heart. He was a voice in our headphones. If that was it, imagine the condition of someone who spent almost all their time with him.
Stay strong Mike :-)
WE LOVE YOU <3

We all might identify LP with Chester's voice but Mike has always been the main man behind it - a reason why his own songs actually sound like LP.

Ps. we all miss Chester so badly...

I met him yesterday. It was so amazing!! He shook my hand and listened to what I had to say and gave me a hug.
