Magnetic Stirrer Makes Water Testing Easy Peasy!

When I stumbled on this online, I was so impressed that I reached out to the maker to see about getting some to sell from my shop. Instead, he gifted me the device. It's just as cool as I expected it to be, so a day after I got it I'm posting this video. You'll see me test my reef's saltwater with Salifert Phosphate, Elos Alkalinity, Elos Calcium and Elos Magnesium test kits with this magnetic stirrer. So much easier than shaking the vial after each drop! I don't know when they will be coming to the U.S., not even what they cost. When I know more, I'll update this description.

It looks like a red sea beaker I've got in my magnesium kit. COULD TOTALLY SEE THIS SHAKER BEING WORTH IT!! No more shaking after every drop when titrating!

I spotted another application for this device that got my imagination going. Using the same device, set it up with a timer to cycle it on for one minute, and fill the vial with liquid foods. With it installed in a tiny mini fridge, you could use a dosing pump to add some food every couple of hours automatically. Cyclop-eeze, Oyster Feast, Fish Eggs, baby brine shrimp nauplii... how "cool" is that?!

They actually look very easy to make... There are lots of DIY magnetic stirrer how-to's done with magnets glued to a cheap computer fan. I'm going to try making one with an Arduino so it has a built-in timer! :)

Called it Ecotech spintech mp- 0.010. Make it black and put QD name on it. Sell for $$$. Spare parts wet side ( white bead) costs you $$ and made it last no more than a year so can sell more parts. Take the 9v battery out and sell battery back up as extra item to made more $$$ and finally remove the control knob and add wifi module that you need to buy as extra to control the spin speed. :)

How cool!  I've seen stir bars used in other applications, and they're pretty nifty.  I did have one thought: for vials that don't fit perfectly in the seat, what if you put a rubber band around it to secure the vial in the seating, like a seatbelt?  That should keep any awkwardly fitting vials from flying out when you turn the stir bar on.  At least, in theory.  :D

That's just awesome. I'm so excited by the possibilities for home science with 3d Printing. I just made a post on my local clubs facebook group about all the dosers and frag racks I've seen available on Thingiverse. That is a really cool idea.. Yet another medical crossover that can make our hobby better like the Masterflex pumps. Gotta say though you should get another mag test kit lol.. Salifert you be done in half the time Jmo but that's a Pita just for the mag..
