American naturalist and philosopher Henry David Thoreau described this Bird of the Week’s song as sounding like: “Drop it, drop it — cover it up, cover it up — pull it up, pull it up, pull it up.” Is this the new dance craze we’ve been looking for!? 🕺

The Brown Thrasher has a mellow, musical tone and a large vocal repertoire, with thousands of song types (one of the largest of all birds). In early spring, newly-arriving males are especially conspicuous as they sing from high, open perches while establishing new territories. Once pairs form and begin to nest, Toxostoma rufum becomes much more elusive, staying hidden under thick cover.

At the end, the call in the background is a male cardinal.
