World Cup: German news channel Welt criticised for drawing link between Morocco players photo and IS

German news channel Welt is facing criticism after it said in a report that Moroccan players were “posing with the Islamic State gesture”, referring to a photo featuring three of Morocco’s players celebrating their win over Portugal by raising their index finger.

The gesture has been used by Muslims for centuries and is a celebratory reminder of the oneness of God and an affirmation of faith, which the report acknowledged but simultaneously claimed it had been “appropriated by jihadists” and questioned whether the Moroccan players were “aware of the meaning of the greeting”.

Other German media outlets and journalists had previously raised accusations of antisemitism towards World Cup fans for prominently displaying the Palestinian flag and chanting pro-Palestine slogans during matches.
