Some things about Heliotrope

Heliotrope is worth every cent for its...ahem...scent alone. And it's an annual that blooms and reblooms from May until October. A hidden secret? It will tell you easily when it needs a longer drink of water.

I love heliotrope, but none of the garden centers near me grow them anymore. I think they smell like baby powder, I just love the scent!

I just subscribed, loved your great communication skill, I hope I can find them here in Southern California, zone 9 Riverside, and that they might love living with us 🤞❤💐

We live on the central California coast and I've had one of my Heliotrope plants in a container for 7 years and the other one for 5 years. They are outdoors but under a cover year round. I didn't know they were annuals.

I liked heliotrope so much for its leaves, flowers and fragrance that I purchazed three plants last year, and they weren't cheep. So, I took them inside for winter, and to my disappointment, one died  and two remaing plants got so woody and sick that I'm wondering if they will revive in my garden where I returned them a couple of weeks ago. They sit there without any changes. When looking for information regarding heliotrope  maintenance, I found ( to my big surprise!) that this plant is dangerous for pets: it destroy their liver... So, be careful!

Thanks! I know that in Texas, this plant won't be that happy, but I'm gonna park it in with my hibiscus and all of the other canna-banana fury that likes lots of water and fertilizer and give it a shot!

i live in Vista, Ca. and we had no frost last year. It's planted in the ground part shade/sun. It's over 5 feet tall and has been a delight. If it doesn't freeze this winter will it get bigger?

I love heliotropes, but mine always die in the winter! I live in central California, I tried bringing my potted heliotrope inside for the winter and it's not doing so hot. Maybe i need to trim it more?

FB friends, we got the biopsy report back and with great sorrow I must share this....Our darling girl died from the toxin in this plant that I have on my deck. It is called heliotrope and is highly toxic, causes total liver destruction. The pathologist said our angel had the worst liver damage he's ever seen. Goldie would nibble at the leaves of this plant every so often and we had no clue it was toxic. (It can come in white or purple.) Please share with any dog owners you know to hopefully prevent their dog from becoming a statistic like Goldie. We are even more heartbroken now knowing her death was preventable. Please share her story so that something positive may come of it and create awareness of toxic plants. Our own vet had no idea this was a toxic plant!!

I live in Canada and the winters are frigid, can I rinse off the roots and leaves, repot it and bring it into the house for winter? If so, will it adapt to being indoors?
