Boris Johnson Calls For Referendum On UK’s ECHR Membership

Talk’s Ian Collins asks: Should we have a referendum on leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)?

It comes after former prime minister Boris Johnson says there is ‘a case’ for calling a vote on it.

Tory leadership frontrunner Robert Jenrick has pledged to leave the ECHR, which he said makes it impossible to deport unauthorised migrants.

There does need to be a debate on this, and a referendum. This is a fundamental constitutional issue and as such the people need to decide.

There should be a referendum on both the ECHR and immigration, open to all British citizens. Not everyone living in this country, just registered British citizens. Let the majority of Britains decide on these two vital topics.

People who voted for Brexit did not really understand what is the consequences of leaving the EU.Therefore people will not understand what the consequences of leaving the ECHR.If it means becoming slave to the king forget it.

We elect politicians to make difficult and complex decisions just like this one. Clearly Boris did not act to withdraw from the ECHR just like he didn't stop the increasing illegal migration or arbitrary covid lockdown rules being applied. Should we have had referendum on those policy issues as well?
