Trump Lists Reciprocal Tariff Charges on Countries

On April 2, President Donald Trump announced broad “reciprocal” tariffs on imports from US trading partners across the world. The US will impose a minimum 10% tariff on all trading partners and slap even higher rates on about 60 countries that hold large trade surpluses with the US. For example, the reciprocal rate on imports from China will be 34%; from the European Union, 20%; and from Vietnam, 46%.

According to a White House fact sheet, the global 10% tariff will go into effect on April 5 and then will be replaced by the individualized higher tariffs on April 9.

These are all imaginary numbers. This man is so embarrassing. The only way you can approve of him is if you only get your news about him from him or his minions

Making sure to say "Charge them" to try and make it seem to the public they won't be the ones paying for it.

These are not reciprocal tariffs at all. A total lie. The calculation formula is in Greek; however, when you look at it in English, the calculation is actually the trade imbalance. The U.S. is largely a consumer nation that has exploited low labor costs overseas. No one is cheating us. We have been exploiting the world for at least the past 100 years. Most countries either don't want or can't afford what we produce.

Tariffs are going to send the USA into a great depression if they are not removed quickly. It is not possible to make rash, uninformed, and sweeping changes, without negative consequences. This applies to every situation. In the case of our economy, experts have fine-tuned our system of trade for decades, and that is why the USA is the richest country in the world. A scientific and reasonable approach is needed to succeed in anything. Our economy cannot afford to be in the hands of someone who operates based on their gut feelings and has a track record of multiple business failures.

What Trump Did:

Imposed tariffs on EU steel and aluminum in 2018 — same 25%/10%.

Later added tariffs on European wine, cheese, aircraft parts, and more during the Airbus-Boeing subsidy dispute.

Trump’s Complaints:

Claimed EU imposed high tariffs on U.S. cars — especially 10% on American autos, while U.S. only had a 2.5% tariff on EU cars.

Said EU treated the U.S. like “a piggy bank that everyone was robbing.”

EU’s Response:

Retaliated with tariffs on U.S. goods like motorcycles (Harley-Davidson), whiskey, jeans, and even boats.

Said Trump’s tariffs were unjustified and violated WTO rules.

The Hypocrisy:

Trump complained that EU tariffs on U.S. cars were too high, but threatened to raise U.S. car tariffs to 25% on EU cars.

While he called EU protectionist, he was actively doing the same or worse.

IF these tariffs were actually bad for America, the rest of the world would be happy to see America losing its grip. It's crazy how every foreign country suddenly cares so much about American citizens having to pay this new "import tax." You guys are so kind!

Donald Trump has long supported and implemented protectionist trade policies — such as increasing tariffs on steel, aluminum, Chinese goods, and more. His argument has often been that tariffs protect American industries and jobs. But when Canada imposes its own protectionist policies — like high tariffs on U.S. dairy imports (reportedly up to 270% or more on some products) — Trump criticizes it harshly, saying it's unfair.

So, the hypocrisy is:

Trump wants other countries to open their markets to U.S. products, especially agriculture.

But at the same time, he raises tariffs on their exports to the U.S. — even allies like Canada, Europe, and Mexico.

It’s a case of “Do as I say, not as I do.” If protectionism is okay for the U.S., other countries could argue they have the same right to protect their industries too.
