Protip: if your cat is prone to chin acne, or you want cleaner water for them, get a ceramic fountain. They don't cost much more. No matter how long you scrub, you can not completely clean the plastic ones, and they get slimy fast.

We switched from bowls to fountains because of my boy. He is a Manx-mix that LOVES to paddle in puddles of water. We had fountains that were great because they didn't leave a puddle on the top, just the constantly moving stream, but we started having issues with the filters and the water would get backed up. So we bought new fountains with a different filter system and my boy rediscovered the joy of spreading the water around. My brother solved this problem by drilling a whole bunch of holes into the top tray, so that the water doesn't build up where he could splash it.

The bowl doesn't work because:
A: the water is stagnant
B: their whiskers hit the sides of the bowl before they can get to the water.
