Lyrics

Park the car at the side of the road
You should know
Time's tide will smother you
And I will too
When you laugh about people who feel so
Very lonely
Their only desire is to die
Well, I'm afraid
It doesn't make me smile
I wish I could laugh
But that joke isn't funny anymore
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know ...
Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
Oh ...
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh ...
And now it's happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
(I've seen this happen)
Happening in mine
Oh...now, now
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh...
And now it's happening in mine
(Happen)
Happening in mine
Oh...
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
Happening in mine
Mine, mine
Happening in mine

My favourite Smiths song. Couldn't believe it when I heard it first, that refrain at the end. The whole song builds to this climax and when it my God.

Well everyone who felt depressed and lonely would relate but this track makes me very emotional, especially when it says "I've seen this happening in other people's lives... and now it's happening in mine"

"time's tide will smother you"... I've been feeling that in my bones the last two years

Johnny Marr faded in an extra 30 seconds at the end cause he knew you wouldn't have gotten enough of it.

When they played this at The Hollywood Palladium in 1985, most of the audience was in tears. A beautiful song. One of their best.

It annoys me when people say Morrissey's lyrics are depressing and miserable, bullshit! Morrissey sings about real life. Real life is not all love, sunshine and rainbows, there's also loneliness, heartache and other strong emotions, thats why so many people can relate to his songs.

Their saddest song and probably their most beautiful one too. The lyrics and the crying guitar ❤💔

That wailing guitar goes amazing with the lamenting vocals and mood of the whole composition. Simply a one of a kind song.

I was a 90's punk kid until i heard The Smiths and Morrisey and then my mind was opened up to so many amazing and poetic songs from the Moz.

The fadeout/upswell/fadeout in the outro is freaking brilliant.

Nothing else anywhere sounds remotely like this at all. Captured the human soul most uncannily.

I always knew The Smiths but it's only in the last month or so that i really got into them. I was such an idiot. One of the best bands on the planet, without a doubt.
