Sarlat is a magical town in an enchanted medieval region know for its gastronommy, were duck and truffles are king. The Périgord has the highest concentration of the "Beautiful Villages" of France recipients, and each has a lively cultural scene. Sarlat has TER train service to Bordeaux that's cheap and takes about two hours. The area has a mild four season climate with more sunshine than the north of France, snow is rare but winter is wet.
A very large British and rapidly growing US expat communities make hearing English a very common thing, almost too much at time, you won't be unique! Hiking, biking, hunting, fishing and kayaking the rivers make this a very outdoor friendly area. If there's a downside to the Perigord (the old name for the Dordogne Department), it is the rapid gentrification and tourism, this is a "gem, " but it is not hidden, summers can be overwhelming.
The two departments to the south (Lot and Lot-et-Garonne) are very similar, but without the amount of tourist, still somewhat hidden, at least for now.

WOW! That was a great little town. What fun poking around everywhere. What a life! Looking forward to hearing and seeing more on your France travels. Must have been an absolute blast!

Well said, it is indeed respectful to learn the language - as some don't.

Super glad you are going to go over France. It's on my short list of countries I am considering for retirement in 5 years. I think we will come to Europe this summer and tour Portugal, Spain, France, and visit some friends in Belgium.

I was in Sarlat last week for 3 days and it is indeed a very nice city. But be careful, on sunny days, the streets are really full of people.

Stayed in both SAR-LAH & SAHN A-MEAL-E-OHN. You and your family have great taste - literally and figuratively.

First, welcome to France.
Second, wherever you decide to live, you need to check 2 important things : communication network for many reasons and proximity to hospitals, even small ones.
It may sound magical and peaceful in extreme rural villages, but as you get older, you will feel more and more the impact of the distance from emergency healthcare. The best distance being 30 minutes from the nearest hospital. So you will need to check traffic around.
The highways network in France and in Europe in general work differently from the USA, so being close to one doesn't mean faster access to any commodities. Departments (more or less what counties are in the US) roads, marked D### allow speed up to 70 kmph, and national roads that allow speed up to 90 (I think it's 80 now) kmph proximity prove to be much more useful for your daily needs and trips than any highway.

You guys are definitely adventurers at heart. Scarlat-la-Canada looks like a wonderful place to be. And, HA! Though I tried, I couldn't find any limps in the video description.

Hello, I live 17 miles from Sarlat, a little city I truly love, but... From May to September is infested with noisy tourists, while from November to April it is rather humid, cold... and dead, with people only reappearing for market days

Prices are higher than I expected. Southern Italy has very reasonable prices.

Sarlat is nice, but often quite overrun during the summer by tourists

The French are all very friendly. Sole exception can be Paris. It's a bit like an UFO that landed there.

you understand now why the French love their country and are not emigrants, ooops expats. France used to be the best country in the world on many stages before it has become, alas, so americanized
