John huffing a rum cake is quite preppy. This cake freezes beautifully - the second round of glaze will bring the thawed cake back to the land of the living, and no one will be the wiser. My grandmother's recipe called for finely chopped walnuts sprinkled in the bottom of the pan before adding the cake batter, and it was always a winner. I love a caramelized crust, so I butter the pan thoroughly and then shake super fine sugar throughout and it gives it a wonderful crust.

It's so good to see a rum cake not using a packet mix! Which is very typical in the US. I will definitely try this recipe in the near future and give my thoughts.

I went to the Cayman Islands and have been obsessed w rum cakes ever since. I developed a recipe and have been using it to make variations. Everybody’s favorite so far is pineapple, can’t wait to try it with this recipe!

I bake rum cake every year for Christmas. Normally, I brown the butter while steeping a cinnamon stick in it. A little hit of spice and the nuttiness just add an extra oomph of flavor. Typically, I use all purpose, but I'm certainly taking notes to use cake flour now.

Oh, my, days that looks good!….. we have just got back from the store a few hours ago with a bottle of Pineapple and Coconut Spiced Rum, I have a feeling some is headed this cakes way! Thanks John…..come on 5 million! x❤x

I use the homemade goop to coat my Bundt and cake pans, it’s equal parts of flour, oil and crisco, mix it all together and keep it in a jar in my pantry. When baking a cake I just brush it in the pan with a pastry brush

This cake looks wonderful! When I butter and flour a Bundt, I put the prepped Bundt in the fridge so the butter doesn’t pool. This also allows me to prepare the pan before mixing it batter.

My Grandmom's friend used to make a whisky cake that was a lot like your rum cake. I definitely want to try your recipe, both with dark rum and with whisky.

Great timing! I’ve been making the same rum cake since 1972 and in recent years have fled the prepackaged/processed ingredients approach in most things (cake mix & pudding mix in this case). My brother made a special request so I gave in and made him the old version 😖. Boy oh boy I could taste and smell those ‘chemicals’. Thank you for sharing!! Gotta have that glaze!! Yum 🥰. PS - I always cover with cling wrap and let it “sit” for three days before serving).
