Certain moments in our lives seem to last forever. Whether it is a first kiss or a car crash, time can can seem to stretch...or even stop. Aaron Sitze explains how this sensation is conveyed in cinema and how the same conventions can be used to slow down time in your writing.

Proud to say that this man was my English teacher sophomore year of high school. He's an amazing teacher and an awesome person. In fact, this is actually a lesson that he teaches in class. Hearing this makes the hair on my arms and back stand up just thinking about the experiences I had in his class and how much I looked forward to it.

Mr. Sitze... the very reason I decided to become an English major in high school. I never thought I would be watching this lecture on the Interwebz, though... pretty awesome, I have to say.

Gotta say the same, his class was one of my favorites. I loved all my English teachers at that school. First hour English was always a great time. Also, it's pretty cool seeing old classmates showing up here!

I'll save you 6 minutes of your life.
Summary: "Slow down time in writing by being very descriptive of the scene, such as describing every emotion, body movements etc."

I think it depends on the author. Robert Jordan, for instance has spent pages describing a scene, before anything really starts happening. But once it does, the mental image you have of the scene is an intricately colorful tapestry. I think of it as world building. Some can achieve this, and keep the reader engaged, and others can't. I'd say Stephen King can, though. The Dark Tower series, for example.

My presumption that this video is meant for kids doesn't come from the fact that the video is entertaining and educational! Of course education is an all going, endless process. What does this have to do with children anyways? The lecture's content is perfect for pupils who want to learn basics of picture-taking, slow-motion shooting and basics of writing good essays/stories etc - all in one video!! These thing may seem obvious to "grown-ups", but are really awesomely presented for school-kids.

Already knew the overdetail tip, but couldn't explain it this good. Genial as usual.

I think I know who this is. Do you remember him teaching this in class? I do, and thinking about him teaching it while watching this makes the hair on my arms, neck and back stand up.

I don't doubt that slow motion has artistic value, but at least for me, my memories play at normal speed.
