What Happened to Dribbble?

What’s happened to Dribbble? Or is it something that happened to you personally? Why is everyone saying Dribbble is bad for designers? Is it because you can’t rely on trends, or has the platform just run its course? I feel like there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye. This is a really interesting conversation that touches on the core of what it means to be a designer, the essence of design itself, and the personal journey of every designer. That’s what I want to talk about with you in this video.

I love Dribbble for finding inspiration on how to address specific problems (ie: a conditional rulers UI with three levels). There are still many designers who still post value content there besides just fancy looks.
Thanks for your content, I love your channel.

It's not just Drivvvle, it's all the social platforms and the way we all -- not just designers - are connected. I cannot tell you how many times clients have been on Behance or Dribbble and said they want their project to look like "Apple" or "AirBnB" or pulled together a moodboard based on images from the web.

On a re-brand I was working on last year, the client went so far as to say "I want to look like everyone else". I did an exhaustive survey of 100 fintech companies, and sure enough about 90% of them looked identical. If not brothers and sisters, at least cousins. I pitched them concepts that no one in their space is doing. And they balked. The CEO went so far as to say he wanted to be like everyone else.

We're in a weird time where the people we work for do not believe in themselves or the companies they work for. They would rather fit in than stand out. Budgets are also tight so that if they are going to invest in their brand, they want something that works -- something they've seen elsewhere. Our job as Designers is to break this behavior, help them see the value of being an individual. Owning their space.

Most designs I see on Dribbble and others solve layout problems rather than product, engineering, or user problems.
How could they? Most of them are not real. They are fake-it-'til-you-make-it portfolio pieces.
