This car was 45 years ahead of its time.. comfortable, sporty and practicle.. think Porsche MaCann, Audi Q5 and all the other small sport utilities with turbo four cylinder engines

The boost could be boosted. :)
Finnish highway police used the Saab 99 Turbo a lot, and it was fast.

one of the only SAABs i like to see today and not many 99 turbo is in good shape today, this was state of the art in the world, not the first turbo car but new inventions in it and a car people could buy.
i mean how many BMW 2002 turbos was even made? and a Porsche was not for ordinary people.
SAAB did alot on money from this in the 80s, aftef that they never had one single model sell very good not till tbe end.
the first years of the 99 had a really bad Triumph engine, but later SAAB made it own engine like in this Turbo.
these early turbocars has a ketchup effekt no matter what this guy say, i guess it was better than the others variants, but its really sudden.
the 99 did 200kmt.

Totally missed safety features, such as 5-7 mph bumpers that actually worked as advertised, full internal rollcage, reverse lights also at the Front side lenses to show stuff to your sides as you backed up, Wiper and sprayers on the headlights for muddy/slushy/salty/dusty roads, just 'Why' the front seats had Full head-rests, the Ignition interlock, and side-door boxed frame impact resistant structures, and the padded frames around the entire passenger compartment. Also, Saab had (since the 50's, btw) dual-Diagonal brake lines, which meant that the brakes would hold Across the chassis IF you blew a brake line, and stop you without a severe font/rear or side/side bias. Yup, Dork with no Knowledge nor idea why he was being paid at the wheel.. Wow, and think, he got paid, for his ignorance and bad glasses, while clueless about just what he was driving; which was the Best Car of the 70's and early 80's. DOH!

The SAAB 99 used the British Triumph slant-4 engine. It was used only in the SAAB for a few years before being used in Triumphs. Triumph put in 4 valves per cylinder increasing HP, installing it in the Dolomite Sprint. SAAB put a turbo on it and fuel injection to get more power, as they had no money to make a new bigger engine. SAAB initially used British made engines, then made them under licence in Sweden, but made improvements as time went on. Many of the engine parts were still sourced in the UK. Triumph discontinued the slant-4 in 1981, but SAAB were still making it 30 years later, up to around 2010, when GM forced them to fit a GM stock engine in SAABs. The rights to the engine is now with the Chinese company BAIC who bought out SAAB. BAIC made a car based on the SAAB in 2013. So this engine from 1968 still continues.

SAAB still exist making EVs but changed their name. The SAAB name reverted to the aircraft making company.

Buick had a v6 turbo sedan in 1978....so SAAB is full of it. Oldsmobile did it in 1962. Front wheel drive and a turbo....that was SAAB.

Given the choice between a saab 99 or a modern BMW I'd choose the saab anyday, modern Beemers are just over engineered crap with a soft engine
