Basic Motor Controls Explained

In this video, I discuss the basic principle of operation for a basic motor control circuit. This example could be found on a simple motor control circuit for say an exhaust fan. I draw out each component and explain how all the components interact with one another. Understanding the basic principle of operation first will set to stage for other TROUBLESHOOTING videos that are to come. Please comment below with any questions you have, and I will do my best to answer them. Also, consider SUBSCRIBING to the channel for future uploads.

Thanks, for watching!

By far, one of the best explanations that I've seen & heard on a video! I've been an electrician for over 20 yrs, & thanks for explaining to everyone how it works!

For anyone reading a small clarification to the end. I know he mentioned it but to clarify when the contactor opens the aux contact opens as well which will keep the motor from restarting once you release the stop button. Also expect multiple aux contacts for things such as indicator lights and SCADA/DCS signals. Lastly there will often be a breaker at the very beginning directly in the three phase lines before any circuitry. This is for circuit protection as well as to kill power to allow for maintenance, repairs, and any other work.

Excellent explanation, thank you. Everything is very clear--except I'm embarrassed to say it took me until 12:31 to realize that when I was hearing "coal", you were saying "coil". That makes *way* more sense! :) Posting in case anyone else was thrown by this.

Nice concise explanation! I just wanted to add that the primary side of the step down transformer has 2 fuses as well. At least the motor controls I work on do. One other thing is it might be a good idea to label the contacts with the ANSI/IEEE device numbers as a lot of the prints we encounter identify the contacts with the device numbers. IE 49 contacts for the thermal overloads, and 42 contacts for the main contactor and aux contacts. I know you are probably just trying to do a simple explanation for newbies, but I figured I'd make this comment for those who are eager for the extra info. Nice Work! 👍
