It's Tough to Be a Bug! is a 9-minute long 3D film based on the 1998 Disney·Pixar film A Bug's Life. Using theater lighting, 3-D filming techniques, audio-animatronics and various special effects. Flik, from A Bug's Life, hosts the show and educates the audience on why bugs should be considered friends.

The attraction opened in Disney's Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort on April 22, 1998, a full seven months before the actual feature debuted in theaters. A second version of the attraction debuted at the opening of Disney California Adventure on February 8, 2001.

The overture consists of a medley of "One", "Tomorrow", and "Tonight" while the voice of a female bug counts down the minutes to the next show. At California Adventure, the voice is a male bug and has "Flight of the Bumblebee".

The doors close, and the announcer tells the audience not to buzz, sting, pollinate or chirp during the show. Flik welcomes the audience and tells them to put their bug eyes (3D glasses) on. The show begins with the butterflies flying away. The title card, a leaf that says "It's tough to be a bug!", appears. Then, jungle music begins to play, and a Mexican redknee tarantula (referred to as a Chilean Tarantula in the show) named Chili makes his appearance, surprising Flik. A pair of acorn weevils, along with Weevil Kneevil, place a slingshot on the stage and launch acorns from it. Chili shoots the first acorn with a quill, but fails to shoot the second due to Weevil holding on to it. Weevil then taunts Chili, who chases after him. The next guest is a soldier termite who defends his mound by spraying intruders with acid. A piece of the set (wood) falls with a rumble and the "Termitnator" steps out. The termite shoots at a taunting flea. Sensing more intruders, the termite shoots at the audience (despite Flik's protests) until he runs out of acid and leaves. Flik next introduces a stink bug named Claire de Room, who walks onto the stage. The acorn weevils place a flower as a target. Weevil re-enters the scene and crashes into the flower, causing it move towards the audience; Claire then passes gas, which affects and disgusts both Weevil and the audience.

An explosion is heard as Hopper, furious that Flik has allowed humans into the insect world, appears. A rhinoceros beetle chases Flik off the stage and four Weevils hold up an ad for "Knock 'em Dead" exterminators. The acorn weevils turn over the ad and use it as a makeshift movie screen to show clips from old monster movies featuring giant bugs. Hopper thinks that it's time for humans to have a taste of their own medicine, and a giant fly swatter attempts to flatten the audience. The screen goes black as a hand appears with a can of bug spray. Hornets sting the audience, and several black widow spiders go up and down, trying to capture and scare the audience. Hopper says that nothing can stop him, but a chameleon appears and tries to eat him. Hopper, afraid of the chameleon, retreats.

Flik reappears and says that he forgot to mention the reptiles, which segues into the finale. Bees, dung beetles (The Dung Brothers), dragonflies and ladybugs sing about how insects help humans and about how "it's tough to be a bug". Weevil returns, holding a moldy cupcake, and the bugs chase him. The butterflies come back to form as curtains and Flik wraps things up, saying that magnifying glasses are for looking at little things, not for burning little things, and the show ends. The bugs start to talk all at once as they exit. The announcer then tells the audience to gather up their personal belongings and take their "small grubs" by their "grubby little hands" as they exit. In the Animal Kingdom show, the female voice says to exit through the doors to the left, while the male voice says to exit through the doors to the right.

Dave Foley - Flik, an ant
Andrew Stanton - Hopper, a grasshopper (replacing Kevin Spacey, the voice of Hopper in A Bug's Life)
Cheech Marin - Chili, a Mexican redknee tarantula.
French Stewart - The Termite-ator, a termite.
Tom Kenny - The Dung Beetle Brothers, two dung beetles.
Jason Alexander - Weevil Kneevil, an acorn weevil.

I actually saw the spiders in their holes when I sat down in the theater while waiting for the show to start. I said to my self “ that can’t be good”

To this day that Hopper animatronic is still the most realistic Disney animatronic in terms of movement that I've ever seen

I WENT ON THIS LAST WEEK AND THE LAST PART WHERE YOU FELT THE BUGS CRAWLING ON YOU WAS SO UNEXPECTED! BUT WHAT MADE IT SO MEMORABLE WAS THE LADY IN FRONT OF US LITERALLY JUMPED OUT OF HER SEAT AND SCREAMED “OH SH**! OH SH**!” IN FRONT OF ALL THE LITTLE KIDS. IT WAS HILARIOUS!

It's funny how the screams are the loudest with the spiders. Everyone hates spiders.

This attraction is a nightmare. The little kid behind me went in and said "I'm so excited!" Then, it got dark, things were punching your back, and spiders came down. After that, the kid was crying and screaming "I don't want to be here anymore" and neither did I lol

Hopper: "You're over your target black widow spiders!"

Person in the croud: "Spiders?!"

The screams of terror are hilarious. This show is just one step below Alien Encounter in scare factor. hahaha

I have a DISTINCT memory of seeing this show as a kid where I have a SERIOUS FEAR OF SPIDERS. I was freaking out and during the spiders part my mom just kept say "Don't look up! Don't look up!!!" To this day I can't go on this freaking ride

I guess I'm the only one who thinks this show is so unique! The practical elements are so well done, and really immersive! From the animatronics interacting with screen elements, the falling spiders, the smoke effect it all really takes up at step from just your average 4D show. And the queue is so great and atmosphereic, and it adds to the experience of the show.

My dad dragged my nine year old self into this show years ago. He wanted to see it, he thought it would be fun for both of us. I saw the words “4D” and “bug”, and was like “NOPE.” But I had to endure it if I didn’t wanna risk leaving the park for the rest of the day. The show started, and at first I didn’t think it was TOO bad, but it quickly turned into a living nightmare, and I wanted nothing more than to escape, but was too afraid of what would happen if I tried to leave my seat. I remember hearing the screams and sobs of kids who were just as terrified as I was. And at the end of the show when I felt little bugs running around the seats and floor, I SPRUNG up from my seat, screaming my head off one last time. I was so mad at my dad for putting me through that, and to make up for it he took me to a live animal show with some very pretty scarlet macaws. It’s a miracle that I didn’t end up having any nightmares after that experience😅

I always love how this show educates people about bugs and arachnids. It gives invertebrates a voice at animal kingdom.

I was traumatized by this show, I was loving it until the hornets started stinging my back. The spiders actually caused my very first panic attack!
Even now, I still get super anxious when seeing this. But it's pretty fun to watch the show

To those who never got to experience this, there are air cannons in the theater during the Chilean Tarantula scene, you get sprayed with water during the termite scene, the smell of the the stink bug is the same scent on the Figment ride, the bug spray felt like pressurised strong wind and water sprays, the sting is a quick tap on the back, and the insects leaving the theater felt like wheels under the seats giving you a butt massage.

I love how Hopper is more concerned over why there is a bunch of humans watching them and not "YOU TRIED TO FEED ME TO BIRDS! I'M GONNA RIP YOUR APPENDAGES OFF ONE AT A TIME AND SLOWLY!"

Everyone was terrified of this show, meanwhile I was young and absolutely loved the whole experience. Guess that’s the benefit of A Bug’s Life being your second favorite Pixar film😂
