This Ancient Puzzle Game Inspired Thousands of Games - Myst

Myst Part 1 - back in 1993, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, Myst was released. The game's unique approach to mystery and puzzle solving resonated with video game developers everywhere. Pretty much every first person puzzle game took some inspiration from Myst. A 2021 remake just came out, let's see if it holds up.

How long ago is 1993 exactly? The exact amount of time is unsure, but historians place it between the dominance of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle and the first Mesopotamian society. Truly amazing that this game has withstood the test of time and receives remakes in our current year.

To set a frame of refrence for how old this game is, I once read a story that detailed someone's first playthrough of this game. When they were stuck, they called a hotline for in-game tips, the tip was to listen to the surrounding enviroment, which was hard for that user, because their PC didn't have an audio card.

So the walkthrough book to this game had an actual walkthrough and then a walkthrough written out in the form of a journal from the player’s perspective iirc. And I never got to play the game but I loved that journal so much I read it about 17 times

I’m pretty sure randomized means the puzzle solutions are randomized, with they way to achieve said solution also changing to fit the new solution. This is because the original myst puzzles weren’t randomized, so if you knew the solution, you could skip the puzzle

I remember watching my dad play an original version of one of these game once or twice back when I was like 7, before I even knew what video games really were. Knowing there’s a remake and being able to actually understand what this game is now that I’m not basically a fetus will be amazing, I’m very excited to know that this is something that exists.

0:17 haven't looked into the new version so I might be mistaken as to what the randomize solutions option means, though for those who are unaware the older game had puzzles that had the same solutions set in stone. The reason why that's relevant is that if I recall it's really easy to speedrun the old version since technically you only needed to know the solution to a certain puzzle (and if you memorized that one solution, then all the other puzzles become obsolete).

Myst has the most nostalgia of any game to me as I played it as a little kid, your channel and the games you have played really reminds me of those days, seeing you play this new remastered version is great. I hope you enjoy the game and series

Me and my dad play this back. Like before I was even able to understand how to solve puzzles really. We kept up with thewhole series, and the first one I sorta helped with was Myst 4. Such memories man. Thanks for playing it.

I beat this game as a kid at my mom's friend's house using their left handed trackball mouse. It was my Genesis as a truly powerful gamer

I actually still have the original 1993 version lying somewhere in the attic, I think. Used to get so frustrated when I was a kid trying to solve the puzzles whilst awing at everything.

Yay, you're finally playing my favorite game ever! I hope you play the rest of the series too. Myst, Riven (read Myst 2), and Myst 3 are all top-notch, Myst 4 starts getting a little weird, but is still amazing, and you don't really need to bother with Must 5, its visually beautiful, but the puzzles amount to little more than a bug-hunt.
