"We are living through the tech-enabled unraveling of full-time employment itself," says anthropologist Mary L. Gray. As the pandemic exposes and accelerates the shift to on-demand online labor, Gray takes us inside the jobs being created to solve the problems artificial intelligence can't handle -- and explains why our economic recovery hinges on extending essential benefits to all workers. (This virtual conversation, hosted by TED business curator Corey Hajim, was recorded July 6, 2020.)

Hi. The hashtag SaveTedRussia is written by people from the Soviet Union. Very few people speak English fluently. There is a channel on Russian-language YouTube that translates original Ted videos. Monetization on this channel is disabled, translators live on donations from the patron. All videos in Russian contain links to the original TED videos. The other day, the translators received an email that Ted would block the YouTube channel. A huge number of people who do not speak English and watch Ted in translation will be deprived of excellent educational content. Therefore, they urge leaders not to restrict access to knowledge because of language discrimination. They offer to take popular translators to the TED team and continue to please Russian-speaking viewers with new videos. Thank you for your attention.

"Ideas worth spreading", say TED and issue a copyright claim against Russian channel with translations of TED videos, demanding that the channel be closed. This is hypocrisy and violation of the rights of people who communicating in other languages.

We are all necessary parts of the society. Never before have mental health specialists had so many patients to help! That is to YouTube psychological knowledge can be shared with all viewers for free! This is the silver lining of COVID19.

Эй, с вами всё нормально ?
Думаете люди с русской версии TED на ваш будут переходить? Или как?
Зачем репрессуете русский TED ?
У вас есть всего лишь несколько часов что бы ответить на письмо русского TED.

Authors of TED official also dоn't own ideas of speakers. Ideas of speakers belong to speakers. And speakers just want to share their ideas with everyone. Are you understand?
Why do you monetize other people's ideas - not yours, but at the same time do not allow to simply translate this ideas into another language??

as a programmer i would be devastated losing my full time job and having to work from one contract to another from home. its much more stressful not having that steady paycheck and spending time lining up the next contract on top of the current one. even with employment insurance its almost inevitable that it will be a rollercoaster it seems like. Not understanding the company you work for on a very deep and experienced level is stressful

When the videos are the same size, their shelves line up perfectly. Very satisfying.

While this is all quite true, change must also come to higher education as well. The myth of going to college for between 4 to 10 years full time and popping out as enabled to earn and contribute to a national GDP has disillusioned and saddled with crushing debt far too many globally.

Real professional expertise is acquired on the job. Yes, people should be well rounded. No one aspires to be mediocre so why all of the specious educational requirements for a degree? When the United States Navy trained me to be a radar technician, they didn't waste any time teaching me about nutrition or basket weaving!

I've spent time in higher education at a community college. Made the Deans List every semester and am a lifetime member of Phi Theta Kapaa but I was forced to quit just 6 credits shy of an AAS in Accountancy because they "sunsetted" the degree because not enough graduates were being employed in that field! Circumstances change all the time and we must adapt to them or get sidelined by them. Those are the only two choices you have. And you have a finite amount of time to even devote to all of it to boot.

That was two years of studying that I'll never get back to do something else with. FYI - I use what I learned to help me run my own service business better without having that degree but still.

So similar to slavery; we don't value service employees. Currently it all boils down to money. When there exists such a divide between those who have and those who have not, then your utopia can not be reached.

Employees benefit from the social aspect of work. It should be up to the private sector to make their own decisions. Government involvement is unnecessary.

You realize the workforce has been an issue way before COVID-19 and not from 20 years ago, more than that. The technology is not robust and customers are pissed off.
