An exponent refers to the number of times a number is multiplied by itself. For example, 2 to the 3rd (written like this: 23) means: 2 x 2 x 2 = 8. 23 is not the same as 2 x 3 = 6.
In the expression, a2, a is known as base and 2 is known as the exponent. An exponent represents the number of times the base to be multiplied. For example, in a2, a will be multiplied twice, i.e., a × a and silimarlt a3 = a × a × a.
