Step Response of a First Order Control System [Time Constant etc]

In this lesson we will talk about first order control system. We will give this system a step input and see the response of the system This type of output response is called the step response of a system.

This video explains the unit step response of a first order control system without zeros. A first order control system is the one which only has one pole. When we apply a unit step input to this system then the output of the control system in time domain is called the time response or step response of the system. The step response of a first order system only has one parameter which is called the time constant (Tau) of the control system. This parameter can only effect the speed of response of the control system. Also we will define rise time and settling time of the first order system. These two parameters are design parameters used by control engineers in practical applications of control engineering.
