The Beatitudes - Ave Maria Hour

Radio dramas of the eight Beatitudes!

The Beatitudes are a collection of teachings attributed to Jesus, primarily found in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 5:3–12) as part of the Sermon on the Mount, and also in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 6:20–23), though in a slightly different form. These teachings describe the values and attitudes that are characteristic of those who are blessed by God and are considered foundational to Christian ethical teachings.

In Matthew's account, there are eight Beatitudes, each beginning with "Blessed are..." (or "Happy are..." in some translations). They describe spiritual virtues and the rewards that follow them. Here are the Beatitudes as presented in Matthew 5:3–12:

1. Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven
This speaks to those who recognize their spiritual need and humility.

2. Blessed are the Meek, for they will inherit the earth
Meekness here refers to humility and gentleness, not weakness, with the promise of receiving God's blessings.

3. Blessed are They that Mourn, for they will be comforted
This refers to those who experience sorrow or grief, particularly over sin, but find comfort in God's presence.

4. Blessed are They that Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness, for they will be filled
This speaks to a deep desire for justice and living in alignment with God's will.

5. Blessed are the Merciful, for they will be shown mercy
Showing compassion and forgiveness to others leads to God's mercy in return.

6. Blessed are the Pure in Heart, for they will see God
Purity of heart refers to sincerity and integrity, leading to a closer relationship with God.

7. Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called Children of God
Those who work to bring peace and reconciliation are valued by God.

8. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Those who endure suffering for their faith or moral stand are promised divine reward.
