Cattle INCOMING! Sorting and Shipping Calves

preview_player
Показать описание
We sort off the rest of the grain calves to make a truck load and be shipped to sale. Had a few close calls. Of course the big set that was shipped before this had a lot more action. Took a few kicks on that day but it's all good. A lot more cow and calf working videos coming.

Thanks for watching and feel free to let me know what you think!

Been there, done that, for 50 years. Brought up on a cow/calf operation, feedlot, plus dad was a cattle buyer. All we did was sort cattle for different customers and sort fat cattle. Then started calving in February here in Alberta, Canada. Good times lol

How glad I am l found your videos I am pushing 80 now but was raised in Comanche and brown county we ran cows, hair goats, and sheep, raised cotton, peanuts and feed grain but the 7 year drought in the 50’s was very bad and most farmers lost their farms we stopped farming but kept the land kept a small batch of cattle
And we started working off the farm . God bless you and keep safe. What a joy to

the cattle flow through that set up pretty nice! would've thought they would have balked that straight chute but they went right up for nothing..., any time when the cattle load that fast its a well thought out system!

Funny moment with your dog. He ran right in front of that group of calves you were sorting. That could've hurt.

Just an idea. Where you have the loading race coming of the wide race at an angle you seem to have a bit of trouble getting the cattle to go in there hence why you have a electric prod. Why not change it to a Bud Box arrangement? You have enough race past the entrance to do it really easily and cheaply. All you would do then is run them up the main race and past the entrance to the loading race then shut a sheeted gate behind them. Then, after a few seconds (less for "wilder" cattle) they turn around and will run up the race themselves because they think they are just going back to where they came from. It's an amazing thing to see at work. I found it on you tube years ago and convinced my mate to install one in his yards and he has never regretted it. Gone are the days of yelling and forcing the cattle up the race. They run up the race themselves. We installed some cheap non return gates too, they just pivot above the race. The cattle run underneath them and then can't come back. It cost him nothing in materials and a couple of days welding to totally transform his set up. Look for videos on here that show the system. It doesn't need to be as flash as the ones they have in the big feed yards, it's just the way the sheeted gate swings that's important. In your case it would hinge on the outside fence and the latch would be at the end of the loading chute. Your setup is very easy to modify in this way.

Look how so many of your cattle turn around and come back at you when you force them up the race way. Use this behaviour to get them to easily go where you want them to. It will save a lot of stress and danger for you and the cattle.

Also, where you are cutting out the calves from the pen into the race, why not sheet the gate and the left hand side of the raceway? It seems that a lot of them turn to the left and spin around because they can see their mates and want to go back to them. If you had sheeted gates and sides then they won't be able to see them and should run up the race a bit easier for you which again means less stress and danger for all. Again, it would not cost much or take long to do and could save you loads of time.

Oh, and get the guy to move away from the end of the race way or sheet the sides so the cattle can't see him, or even just his head. That might be causing a lot of your problems too.

Let me know what you think 🙂🙂
