We all heard the year of the linux desktop meme but what if we take it a little bit too seriously what would it actually take to get Linux into mainstream acceptance, into mainstream daily usage.

A year of the Linux desktop would require major unification/standardization, probably spearheaded by a corporation or some large entity, that is able to secure deals with large manufacturers and developers. One would have to almost eradicate the concept of a distribution. And considering the fundamental nature of open-source/free software, and the lack of basically any incentive for this hypothetical entity to accomplish this; the Linux desktop may never have its day.

I have been living the 'Year of the GNU/Linux Desktop' since 1998. My family (parents, wife, 2 children, Uncle, Auntie and a friend or two) have also been 'living the dream' as I will not administrate Windows systems. All of these people are enjoying a fruitful and usuable desktop computing experience. Free the desktop!

As a lifelong Windows user that enjoys Linux as a hobby, the Nano text editor really took me by surprise. I'm sure it's great for developers that have spent trillions of years in the terminal, but for the average user it looks like an absurdly cryptic and confusing mess that hasn't been updated since the 1970s.

I feel like we're going to have a lot more people in Linux because of valve, a lot of people don't move to linux simply because gaming on it was not there yet, I hopped in a bit earlier and I'm never going back to windows, sure gamers aren't everyone but the more people the better

My "Year of the Linux Desktop" is now. I made the switch four weeks ago, Jumped head-first into Arch. Most of my games work out of the box. The only downside so far is that I can't update my sat-nav as the TomTom app doesn't work via wine.

It seems like many Linux developers are just now discovering 1080p, and 4k support is a hit or miss (mostly miss) mess on Linux.

In all seriousness, in the 'Year of Linux Gaming' spearheaded by Valve with the Steam Deck, and the fact that Valve have been bringing features to the device at a blazing pace, it may very well be the push required, beyond of our opinions about the selection of bits that compose the distribution and environment. Its proven to work, and its proven to be a device people actually *want*.

I couldn't agree more with you about standardizing on a fixed distribution or set of distributions with limited options (to avoid overwhelming the intended audience) and in this regard, systems integrators must use the most compatible hardware components to assure the best experience possible and avoid as much as possible OOT drivers and libs.

Hopefully the success of the SD would prompt one of the big tier OEMs to actually ship an array of *affordable* models preinstalled, as usually Linux devices tend to cost more 'in the wild' (making up for the Microsoft Tax, maybe?)

The three distros I could see being pre-installed are Ubuntu for its popularity, Fedora for being the most solid generic distro, and OpenSUSE for its YaST configuration software. Of course, System76 will still ship devices with Pop!_OS, but these three seem to be the strongest options for a “standard” distro.

I've never seen a Linux desktop in a store. I feel like you might be able to find one in-stores during the early 2000s back when Microsoft's strangle hold on desktop OSs wasn't a set-in-stone thing. In modern times, you'll never see a Linux pre-built in-store. People would pick it up, take it home, and realize that this is not Windows. You can plaster, "This is not a Windows machine." on it all day long, but people will not notice. When they get home, if they don't notice after the setup process, they'll notice after they can't get Office installed. Now, it's entirely possible for someone to get a Linux machine, not realize it, and they only need a web browser; therefore, they do not have a single problem and don't notice. When my grandmother gets internet, I'm gonna install linux on her laptop. Not because of me wanting to force it on her; it's because her laptop can barely run Windows 10 and it doesn't meet the shitty requirements for 11. All she does is get on Facebook. I'd write some automatic Scripts to handle updates for her.

9:50 Mostly I'm setting environment variables and redirecting output. In steam I'm doing something like `~/.config/vulkan-nms.sh %command%`, expanding the homedir, and writing that file as a wrapper script using something like `exec "$*"`. This is to setup Vulkan specific settings for No Man's Sky.

When I'm seriously thinking about what it would take to make Linux appeal to the masses I come to the realization that probably a large majority of the community would hate that effort and get extremely toxic about it.

I believe all we need is preinstalled Linux computer in shops and some marketing and it will be the year of Linux.

I think the only two distros that should be used mainstream are fedora and mint. Arch and everything based on it is too cutting edge and might overwhelm new users. Mint is good for Windows users and people who use their PC rarely / don't know anything about PCs, because it is based on Debian which makes it incredibly stable, and uses KDE which makes it more similar to Windows. Gamers and MAC OS users should use Fedora because it gets more updates while not being too cutting edge.

Before anyone says that using Arch or arch-based distros is easy and that you can just change the desktop environment: My friends are not even able to install software on Windows PCs on their own. Some can but like 60% can't. I don't even want to introduce them to the terminal. They don't even know about ctrl + c and ctrl + v for pasting commands.

All they would want if they switched to Linux is a place where they can install software and steam. That's it. No terminal, no editing config files, or tinkering. Mint comes closest to that. Fedora might require a small amount of tinkering and that's why I only recommend it to people who use their PC frequently.

What about Pop_OS!, Manjaro, Ubuntu, ...?
They all are good options too. But if I had to pick two distros, one that is as beginner-friendly as possible and one for people who have a little bit of experience using PCs it would be Mint and Fedora. These are the only two big distros that have a huge community that can help out new users AND have a very good history of being stable.

EDIT: I don't think that the Adobe suite and Microsoft office are big reasons not to switch. A lot of my friends use OpenOffice anyway because they don't want to pay for office on Windows and I only know like two out of 20 who have Adobe Programs installed. I don't know a single person that uses these programs regularly.

EDIT 2: But Linux probably won't make it until the community finally accepts proprietary / paid / closed source software. This is the only way to make the big companies accept this operating system. (I'm not a fan of this type of software but this is just how it is)

A feature of the 2022 LTS release of Ubuntu is you can now drag files from the file explorer onto the desktop to make a yeah the year of the linux desktop is a long way off.

So many PC stores still don't have a Mac section, let alone a Linux section...

It would be interesting to see that future though

the year of the linux Desktop will come when the general public are taught how to change the system on their machines (it should taught in schools at this point) and linux will shine through as an option if you know it is there

Okay so i got Linux on my Sisters Machine here are her words
1. Its pretty (Gnome 42 )
2. Works Like a Phone does
3. Apparently very easy to use
4. Typing the App instead of searching Symbols is nice
Just works

Finds it easy to use Other Apps then what she is using Windows
Has NO reason to Switch back
Until school will Be to dumb to open non Microsoft Office Files

Keep in mind she is Not a Gamer Nor uses it for Work

also her words
Windows feels slower
Less polished
Really inconsistent

And yet Here is my mum on the Same Machine
Her words
Linux (Gnome 42 )
Feels Like
Childy Interface
Not Desktop looking alike
Hates the fact that she cant dump Files onto the Desktop
Does Not use search
Because ( it never works)
Never Used workspaces correctly
Does Not Like Not being able to minimize a Program
Not able to maximise Firefox
Too different
Looks pretty but unusable
Wasnt able to Install some Software
(That was supported)
Fears its going to be hard to Switch Apps and stuff might Break in the Office thats Not good

One Thing i learned is that people do Like Linux to some degree
Its mostly fear of breaking stuff
Not being able to adapt
Not being able to Just keep everything as is but have the Looks

My sister now Paste stuff with middle Mouse Button
My mum Said its cool but is Used to right click Context menu

tl;dr Linux is Not Windows and thats good but it will Always deter people from switching
If people are so fearful of their Infrastructure breaking with updating to Windows 10
How the hell will those people ever overcome the fear of breaking stuff.

Linux Just needs to Work as intended all the time
People need to be able to Update from Windows to it without loosing Software or Data or Infrastructure Support.
If anything weird Happens people will Go See i knew it and Switch back to Windows Not because its better but even If it falls horribly
It Just works

4:30 and if you look at Android, you see this is null and void, we got Samsung android Phones( for us this is Ubuntu), then we got lenovo phones(Manjaro), etc.
so if we get Linux in the hands of people they don't care if it is Ubuntu or Fedora or Manjaro.

we may know that Fedora is the new Ubuntu, but they will not, and don't care
