NEMO Switchback - SLEEPING PAD Review

For a recent tent camping trip to Montana, we needed a new sleeping pad. When the Therm-a-Rest Z Lite wasn’t available, we picked up the Nemo Switchback instead and tested it on both rocky and grassy campsites. This is our experience using the Switchback for several nights outdoors, including how it performed in terms of comfort, durability, and packability compared to other foam pads we’ve used.

I like my switchback, but I’ve never used it as a stand alone pad. Just for added warmth in colder months/to keep my blowup from sliding around. I worry it wouldn’t provide enough padding on its own. As for an inflatable recommendation, I really love the Sea to Summit Comfort Light. I’m a side sleeper and it performs great. Solid R value. No gripes aside that it’s not particularly quiet (not as bad as the thermarest tho).

Mine lasted about two summers around 3 months in total (190lbs) till the foam started to lose its firmness, Nemo calls it "plush comfort" (laughs), it's ok presumably you're dead tired from the trek and sleep comes quick. Used it on sand-was great and also on very hard ground with the occassional pebble/rock-can't say was a plush experience but was doeable. I went for the closed-cell foam because was wild camping around the Med where summer temps inside the tent can go up to 50C/120F, couple of years back found my self-inflatable with a football size bubble, that made me realize low-tech smart design is the key to survive long periods of wild-camping with minimal damage you can repair on the spot. Will I buy it again? YES

Contrary to your claims, the Switchback is both thicker and packs tighter than the Z-Lite.

How does price compare? If you had to choose again, would you have gone with the one you wanted but was out of stock?

I have found the closed cell foam pads more reliable than the blow up pads. Sleep? When I lay down, after hiking all day, I sleep. If sleeping in the winter I would like more than R-2 insulation. From northern Kentucky
