Hanwha Redback to bring Army some sting

The Government has selected Hanwha Defense Australia as the down-selected preferred tenderer to deliver 129 infantry fighting vehicles to the Australian Army, as part of a major transformation of the Army in response to Australia’s changing strategic environment.

The Government has also decided that the new vehicles will be built in Australia at
Hanwha’s facilities in the Geelong region subject to the finalisation of negotiations and government approval.

Excellent selection. For those who don't know the Korean K21 Redback was pitted against the Germany's Rheinmetall KF-41 Lynx in LAND 400 to replace our out of date M113's in the Infantry Fighting Vehicle role. Both machines are excellent and after a very in-depth selection process the Redback came out on top. IMHO this is the best outcome because of how the Korean Government and Industry are pushing to build out their military arms export market by building production capability in the customer's nation while also selling intellectual property rights and designs. I do not know yet how far this extends in Australia's case, but if Poland's recent deals with Korea are anything to go by this will be very beneficial to our nation.
To everyone who has been working on this procurement process for LAND 400, Thank you! You work is greatly appreciated!

Smart choice. Now both the Redback and the Huntsman can be assembled, tested and serviced in Geelong. Good for local defence industries.

Fact: Lynx is cheaper than Redback. So why Aussie chose Redback? Because Redback has Aussie made parts like turret, inner software and several confidentials. And rubber caterpillar was fit for Redback much earlier than Lynx. Lynx is a great IFV but this time Redback got more score for that.

Good choice to build defence connections with Asian countries.

Locally made should be a welcome military asset, with a bit of luck the Germans are emotionally stable about not getting the tender, with a bit of luck it doesn't damage boxer deals

In large conflicts such Ukraine-Russia war, you're dealing with land mines and grass mines so vehicle must safe the soldiers optimally. Good selection for Aussies.

Yeh except we get a lousy 129 when we should have had 450. What are you going to do make your infantry walk? Albo and Marles are absolute tools.

It looks like South Korea will purchase their own version of Redback as well. Great news for both countries.

Looks good. How many diggers can it carry?

The reason the German government decided to make a deal to build Boxers in Australia was their European factories are fully committed for years to come, replacing the old kit they sent to Ukraine. It wasn't to sweeten the Land-400 deal, so I don't think that deal will be scuttled.

129 vehicles? This is a joke right? Even Hungary ordered 218 Lynx IFVs. Hungary has ~1/3rd of the population and ~1/82th the land area of Australia.

Please explain why we went from 490 of these to 160. If they are so good, where did the money go?

After seeing them in Ukraine. I can't believe we were still using M113....
