It's a lot harder making a completely homebrew class if you seek to have it be roughly in balance line with the other classes.

It is SO so so satisfying though when you do so. :)

Building a new class is only hard if balance is a consideration. ⚖️

For my one-piece game, I built a class for Haki and gave each main ability its own subclass. Since it's a low magic setting, most magic classes are banned, but I take a subclass from all of them and make a devil fruit out of it. Those get stapled on as a free level of that subclass, for example if you eat the mushroom mushroom fruit you get a level up and that subclass, in this case, the druids circle of spores, you gain HP based on the type of devil fruit it is and it works exactly like multiclassing otherwise.

I'm a new dnd player. I made a couple homebrew items the other day just for fun ☺️ (I don't no idea of they're ridiculously op or hilariously weak lol but idrc rn) and it was surprisingly easy. as of watching this I decided to take a crack at a subclass and....the phrase "I'm in over my head" feels like the understatement of the century about now😂

I've actually made two classes. One was called the Investigator (this was before Inquistive Rogues) and was like an Indiana Jones-esque class dedicated solely to dungeon delving. The other one is a Naruto-style "Shinobi" class. Both were really fun to make, but I never got to test the Investigator before I lost the documents for it.

I find I don’t enjoy building subclasses over new classes is that the features I want to add, I don’t want interacting with the features of another class. Because it means I’ll have to compromise the power level of my class or thematically the class features “feel weird” with my class.
Like I’ll consider how this class will work when multiclassing is available, but I want it’s mechanics to be it’s own thing with its own progression

I just made a class based on age of calamity link, and gave it different abilities based on what weapon it had equipped

Naw. It’s always the same formula. You just gotta figure out the pattern and customize it to your thing. Often “a feat” or a modified feat is used. Gotta pay attention to details.

I’d disagree. Building a class does have a step by step guide. In 5E you have 13 separate examples, you have 5 spell casters, 3 half casters, then 5 martial to use as a blue print.

If you want to make a martial, you would look at the other classes to determine what abilities to go where.
