I LOVE this series! I just happened across it via britbox through amazon prime after watching last episode of Inspector Lewis. The cast and writing of McDonald & Dodds is excellent. I LOVE Jason Watkins’s brilliant acting and his character Dodds! Watkins has built the character Dodds so wonderfully reaching into even the tiniest areas of Dodds’s personality, injecting it into the character making him so believable and a joy to watch. He deserves an award as does this series and the writers.

I hugely appreciate that the characters are played seriously, no goofing, no "dry humor, " but actually humorous situations. McDonald is commanding and competent. Dobbs seems rusty, but his experience shines through. They both have dignity and earn the respect of their peers. The cases are smarly presented, too.

Dodds keeps mentioning how he is going down the pub and have a few pints of Old Peculiar, my favorite beer of all time! I’ve been through the brewery and drank at the tied pub with the brewmaster! Heaven in a bottle. First wife and I were traveling in England and went to the town where it is brewed. Stopped at a B&B, turns out her daughter was the secretary of the president of Theakstons. So we got a tour and had a great time. Used to be called “The Lunatic Brew” but England outlawed the use of “lunatic” as a bad use of identity. I tried to get a bumper sticker but no longer available. What a trip!

this was rather good, Robert Lindsay was excellent as usual Jason Watkins brilliantly under playing his role. But as soon as the introductions were over I had sussed who did it . Well worth a watch if diy sluething is your thing.

I am really liking it so far...mind you that I'm only 22 minutes into the first episode, but it's quirky, so it's relatable for my neurodivergent brainworks. Rating: 3⭐⭐⭐ & 2👍👍

Mcdonald and Dobbs sounds like a legal law firm than a detective duo to be honest. Why not call them Mcdonald and King that way they'd be named after a couple of fast food chains lol. Mcdonald comes across like a black Tennison and Vera. Interesting cast though. Bet you anything Ben Harper did it lol. The second ep has Joanna Scanlan from Thick of it and Hugh Dennis from Outnumbered from Not Going Out and Mock The Week and Freddie Fox blimey he's in more demand now since White House Farm. I reckon he did it too.

I like this but a few things perplex me though. They make it seem like these 2 are partners but she’s the leader (DCI) he’s just one of the underling detective sergeants who travels with her, probably for convenience so they don’t waste money on vehicles. Is Dobbs the head DS (detective sergeant)? They don’t seem to acknowledge that. They just want to get rid of him in early retirement.

I love the traditional mystery format but this one (the first episode) was too complicated, they really didn’t drop enough clues about the suspects and the complicated nature of the murder wasn’t really meant to solve. But I do love the format, they’re going with the traditional “locked door” mystery. I hate when things get categorized as “Mystery” but they’re police procedurals or thrillers with no “whodunnit” elements, just gritty crime stuff.

im really pissed off now they are cancelling this great show i would of thought after series 4 there was potential for a bit more especially after the last scene with lauren accepting her boyfriends proposal they could have had a wedding episode for series 5 and maybe make that the final series and just have lauren go back to london and have dodds retire. to cancel it now the way it ended is just stupid and lazy. it reminded me of how the remake of magnum pi ended
