I've listened to BB and Spanish Key about 473, 000, 000 times. I have concluded that this is the greatest song ever recorded

Believe it or not, but this session helped me through my darkest battles with chronic depression, when I was contemplating suicide almost every single day, Miles Davis's music literally saved my life and soul... Now even my two young boys 12 and 8 years old, love jazz and Miles music. 😊😊😊

I work in a factory and the other guys listen to modern stuff, so I expected them to tell me to turn off this jazz immediately. No one did. "This music sounds like when I'm fucking someone!" says my boss. I give him a grin, "This is where that sort of music began." I say back. It's going to be played a lot more often now. A small victory for me and a huge victory for Miles Davis.

Arguably the most influential musical statement of the 20th century,  Bitches Brew was Davis' flawed masterpiece and  for me Spanish Key was transformational. Miles created a highway that must be traversed by all who come after him.  I first heard this tune  in 1970 in my freshman year at UMASS A  buddy insisted that I listen to Spanish Key. My musical world was never the same afterwards. I recall thinking at the time that I had never heard anything like that before. 44 years later, I still have not....

In summer 1970 I was an 18-year-old rocker. I happened to be in Boston and went with some friends to a big stadium to see Mountain, that Cream-like trio with Leslie West on guitar and Felix Papparaldi on bass. In a few minutes, before the show started, the whole stadium was high on pot, the birds flying overhead probably got stoned too... and who did perform the opening act for Mountain? No other than the Miles Davis group playing the Bitches Brew numbers, with Mc Laughlin, Corea, Zawinul, Airto Moreira on percussion, Shorter, etc.! That sound blew my mind forever. I became a Miles fan and Mountain on the final show was nothing compared to the pure sonic magic I had just seen and heard. Miles music was so far out, I had never heard something like it. Moreover, it sounds like pure sonic magic to me even today.

My 18th Birthday August '86. A buddy of mine and I went to Streetlight Recoreds in Campbell CA. .
I bought Blue Cheer best of, Argent, the first Quicksilver LP, and Bitches Brew. Loved all of them but when I put on side three of this album with that cool drum intro and ominous bass, I was Transfixed for nearly 18 minutes. I've been asked several times what my favorite song is. My answer is always "I don't know, I haven't heard it yet." But if I have to really think about it the answer I would give is:"Spanish Key."

I admit, watching Collateral motivated me to find this song.

But the point is, this IS music.

In an interview with Jack DeJohnette, he said that Bitches Brew was not complicated music.  Maybe so, but on this song, 10 interesting or surprising things may be going on at the same time or in succession. I can never get my head completely around it.

Honoring Chick Corea today. His playing on this and so many other classics transcends genre and time. Godspeed.

That transition at about 8 minutes to a more melodic theme is unbelievably beautiful.

This was soul-restoring for me, as it is now and ever will be.

Got turned onto this in 1974. It mesmerized everyone in the dorm. A great one to listen to. Scott, Macintosh. and Klipsh. Got us through post Watergate and OPEC. Yup. Great.
