I'm from New Orleans and king cake is one of my favorite things because they aren't available year-round. There are so many types of fillings, icings, and doughs that people use. Cream cheese is my favorite filling. And yes, most king cakes come with a small plastic baby inside, usually hidden at the bottom so you don't eat it. Great recipe!

Hey John. It's so refreshing to see you bake and normalise being messy in the kitchen. It removes my anxiety of being a messy baker in my kitchen.

Thank you for this recipe! I used to live in Mobile, & yesterday being Joe Cain day, I was REALLY missing a King Cake from the local supermarket chain bakery, Rouse's. But, it costs $60 dollars for them to ship one to you! So, it took me four hours, but I made this, instead, & it turned out PERFECTLY - EXACTLY right! It even SMELLS the same! And, it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it was going to be. Just time consuming with all of the waiting for the dough to rise. But, good things come to those who wait!

I am from New Orleans and we do it a tad differently as far as tradition. There is a small plastic baby put into the cake (through the bottom) and whoever gets the baby in their piece gets the next king cake. But it is so amazing!! The filled ones are even better! Three of my favorites are cream cheese filled, Bavarian cream, and praline 🤤🤤🤤. This makes me miss home 🥰

This looks so great John. I made your crinkle cookies a few months back and they have been my go-to recipe ever since!

Nice to see such a faithful recipe! I'm a Louisiana native and I constantly see King cake recipes that are basically jelly doughnuts with sprinkles. (I do have to say that bavarian cream filled king cakes are delicious tho)

I made this today for Fat Tuesday and it turned out perfect. I chose this recipe, amongst all the many recipes, as it didn't require yolks only, sour cream, or proving the yeast. It was soft, and smelled fantastic while baking. I saw in another recipe where a lady cut the rolled cinnamon dough in half AFTER rolling up to a tube, then twisted the roll together, and I did this, it was truly beautiful. I found the purple sugar at the local Mennonite store. Thank you, and HAPPY MARDI GRAS! 💜💜💚💚💛💛

I used to work for a French company. At new year we had a king cake, and I got to be king for a day. The cake we had was made of puff pastry with frangipane filling, and I didn't know until now that there's also a bread version.

Thank you for making the King Cake. Paczki is very popular in Michigan. They have a Polish suburb of Hamtramck, pronounced ham-tram-ick. My mother was Polish so I grew up enjoying all the wonderful foods. Dad was 50% Italian.

I remember about this cake from French class in high school. Madame said no to the little king inside of the cake, so instead, she recommended using an almond or some other lil nut! how cute~

My daughter wanted to make me your Buche de Noel for my birthday but she wasn't feeling well when the time came so her wonderful husband made it. It was renamed the Son-in-Log. 🤣 He did a great job and now he follows your channel, too. (He loves making bread.)

It is 11:37pm on 2/28/22 and I just baked two of these King Cakes. One is for work and the other for home. Well there is only 1/2 of the home one left. The work one is being eyed but remains untouched 🤣. It smelled so good we couldn't resist a taste. Thank you for this recipe. I am going to enjoy playing around with the different variations. The dough is beautiful and the texture devine.

I haven't had a King Cake since I left NOLA (Mandeville) 6 years ago. I'm going to make this one this weekend. Can't wait!
