U.S. confirms first case of U.K. COVID-19 variant as cases and deaths rise

Health officials in Colorado have identified the first case of a new coronavirus variant first detected in the U.K. CBS News correspondent Meg Oliver reports on the surge in infections already happening across the country, and Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider, internal medicine physician at California Pacific Medical Center, joined CBSN to discuss what we know about the new variant and the challenges hospitals are facing.

First case found in an individual in the middle of our country, someone who hasnt traveled? He may be first, but he is certainly not the only!

Why am I not surprised. A man who DID NOT TRAVEL is found with the new variant in Colorado. Think carefully boys and girls.
Someone had it in say the UK, they pass it to someone else who travels, and they pass it to this person. But this person does not travel or go to the airport. There is a high percentage chance the traveler passed it to at least one person who then passed it to this man. Now think about this. Three passes and each takes 7-10 days to become infectious to others, and each person is spreading the virus for one or two days before they notice their own symptoms. This means the new variant just discovered has been travelling the globe already for at least three-four weeks. Plus they found this variant in South Africa and they all share similarities to one located in a person with similar mutations in Italy (just not all the mutations so he is an earlier version). Overall this means the new more infectious version has been spreading for at least two months, probably three, to already be in multiple countries at the same time. And no one spotted it til now.

What this basically means is .... it's too .. damn .. late ... to stop this new version from spreading and replacing the old. Period. And that merely means they already struggling medical system will be overwhelmed past the breaking point over the next two months.

Keep your thinking caps on boys and girls as we are not done. If this UK traveler had it and flew back into the US to Colorado, this means a connecting flight in NY. If they were spreading already that means it is likely spreading in NY already as well just unseen so far. And if they were spreading it in airports in Colorado and NY, well with at least once connection between patient 0 in the US and this colorado man, you can imagine so easily how it's spread to other cities in the US (again just not detected yet).


No one can stop this new variant as tracing is useless at this point. Present in three countries and in people who do not travel. Yeah good luck tracking that suckers might as well ask for Mary Poppins to come in and make it all better while your at it. And since so little is done testing the virus (nose swab oh you have antigen stay at home), no one really knows how wide spread the new virus version is. So you best prepare is this will be a long cold winter with lots of death and misery.
