All songs sound similar to other songs in some fashion. Stairway to Heaven sounds familiar with My Funny Valentine for instance. Sweet Home Alabama sounds familiar to Werewolves on London. I could go on and on.

People who say songs sound like one another aren't wrong. There are only 12 musical notes in total. When you play a song you have to use a subset of those 12 notes known as a scale. The two most popular scales are the major scale, which uses 7 of the 12 notes, or the pentatonic scale which uses 5. So it's really not surprising that many songs sound alike. Not to mention that most listeners will think songs sound alike if the chord progressions of the two songs have the same intervals, even if they are using completely different notes. So if I played your favorite song in a different key, you probably wouldn't notice. That's why if you learn just 5 chord progressions you can play 1000's of different songs.
