Yeah, they have to be serious with the disciples because they need to be. The Chelas have to understand how important it is to establish certain momentums of spiritual discipline in order to become a greater focus of good for the planet. Plus the master always takes up some of the cheala's karma so progress can be achieved more quickly than would occur otherwise, but, then, the master becomes responsible for that karma should the student fail. (This in a nutshell)
