Lol! "David Lee Roth, I think we've done one of his songs." Dude, lead singer from Van Halen! :)

I guess I am old because I know every single person mentioned. One thing about younger people is that there are so many options nowadays for TV, music, movies, newsfigures, Internet stars etc that it kind of buries many celebrities from the past. boomers and Gen x lived when there were many fewer options so not only were we familiar with the celebrities of our day, we also knew many of the stars from our parents and even grandparents day.

Don't know Arthur Fonzarelli? "The Fonz" from the TV show Happy Days? Probably the most iconic TV character of the late 70s/early 80s!
Oh man, now I'm feeling old!

RIP Norm Macdonald. Was the anchorman. So funny an gone way to soon. Great song. Now I feel so old that I knew all those names.

I wouldn't have realized how dated this song is if I hadn't watched you guys react to it. I'm relatively Adam's age so those were a lot of famous people we grew up with. Now probably half of them died or are in their 70s.

Goldie Hawn has been in SO many 80s and 90s comedies and she's still acting. Recently she was in the funny movie Snatched. One of my favorites is Death Becomes Her.

I remember seeing this song live on SNL. It was the year my daughter was born. Of course, she's 27 now (Math!). I totally understand that people in their 20's would miss most of the celebrity references in the song...but the song still makes me laugh out loud. Thanks. Merry Christmas.

There are 4 versions of this song now. The most recent one includes a reference to Geddy Lee of Rush. David Lee Roth is the singer from Van Halen.

"I don't know any of these people". Well at least we have something in common now. Because whenever they talk about some rapper or Gen Yer celebutante, I don't know who they are either. Call it an age gap crossover.

1:59 BRAD SAYS "I DON'T KNOW ANY OF THESE PEOPLE!" Holy cow I must be old. I knew all of them! In fact I remember seeing this live on SNL back in college, that's how old I am! Near death! lol!

Oh, Norm... seeing him still hurts, we lost a comedy icon and the world still goes on... RIP Macdonald (and Sean Lock while we're at it - how we lose the two best sarcastic icons in the same year is mind boggling...)

Okay; here's a rundown of the celebrities he mentions in the song that you may not know or be able to guess from the context:
David Lee Roth was the lead singer for Van Halen at this time, and later a big solo artist after he left the band.
Kirk Douglas was a huge movie star back in the '60s and '70s, and is the father of movie star Michael Douglas, who was just becoming big in the '80s.
James Caan was also a huge movie star who was in the "Godfather" movies and also the movie "Rollerball" that was popular at this time.
Dinah Shore was an actress and singer who had a TV talk show in the '60s and '70s, but was probably most famous for dating Burt Reynolds, an actor many years her junior (he was best known for being the first nude centerfold in the magazine Cosmopolitan in the mid-'70s and his starring role in the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies).
Sha Na Na was a '70s band whose act was a throwback to 1950s music; "Bowser" was the lead singer.
Arthur Fonzarelli was the real name of "The Fonz" on the '70s show "Happy Days" which was set in the '50s ('50s nostalgia was a big thing in the '70s); the character was played by then-actor Henry Winkler.
Paul Newman was a very famous actor & sex symbol from the '50s-'60s'-'70s known for his striking blue eyes; he was also a race car driver.
Goldie Hawn got her start as a ditzy blonde on the '60s comedy show "Laugh In" and became a well-known actress in the '70s and '80s.
Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock were characters on the original "Star Trek" TV show, played by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.
Ann Landers and her twin sister Abigail both wrote famous advice columns that were syndicated in newspapers everywhere back in the '60s-'70s-'80s. Ann's column ran under her own name, while her sister's was called "Dear Abby".
Harrison Ford came to fame by playing Han Solo in the first "Star Wars" movie (which was actually the 4th when the later films were put into sequence in front of it).
The Three Stooges were a popular comedy act from the '40s-'50s-'60s that are still popular with some people (mainly men). They did a slapstick style of comedy that seems silly to most women.
Everybody who was watching SNL back at this time knew who ALL these celebrities were.

There are newer versions of this song with more current people you would recognize. Sandler has updated the song at least a few times including for his recent Netflix special a few years ago.

I remember that episode. Most of the celebrities he mentioned were relevant 30-50 years ago. Such a clever rhyming song. He did several more versions over the years too.

History people...History! I wasn't alive when the people from my parents' generation were popular, but I know who they are, from movies, tv shows and records. You have no excuse not to know at least a few more of these people. Paul Newman was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and so was "Goldie Hawn." This is telling me you only pay attention to the present and want nothing to do with the past. I wasn't alive during the Civil War in the 1860s, but I know who the important figures, and what the events are that happened. This is a little hard to understand. Not picking on you guys in particular, but I guess your generation in general. Now look up who these people are, and you'll see what I mean.
God Bless
