Wheel design over the years has come a long way. From early cast aluminium wheels made to be lighter than conventional steel wheels to the latest in forged wheels made to be as light as possible. Even the use of exotic materials, like magnesium and recently carbon fibre, all developed in the pursuit of making wheels as light as possible. All of these developments were first seen used in motorsport and then trickled down to “street cars”.

But going back to racing in the 70’s, and in the pursuit of extracting the last bit of competitive advantage, the Porsche 935 appeared on the race tracks with a conspicuous looking wheel cover, covering the center of the wheel. The world was introduced to “The Turbofan”. Made from exotic materials like magnesium and Kevlar, with fins on the inside, these bolt on covers used the centrifugal force of the wheels rotation to suck out the hot air from the brakes after use so cooling them quicker. These proved successful and were later used in rallying as well as on touring cars.

As wheel sizes have increased, multi piece wheel design has evolved. Wheels have got wider with bigger dishes, resulting in the centre’s becoming smaller. So a 20” split rim wheel center ends up looking like an 18” wheel. We wanted to address these issues, hence the FR Series.

Technology has moved at such a pace now that modelling wheels in CAD, can be tested not only for their structural ability but also their aerodynamic qualities. Using this technology is what’s helped us create the new FR series of forged wheels.

Using a one piece double ring center we maximise strength while reducing weight. The result is we maximise the length of the spokes right to the edge of the wheel. The inner ring bolts to the flange of the wheel, whilst the outer ring of the wheel has built in aero vents. These help expel the hot air generated from the brakes. To go even further we offer the FR-Aero option where the vents are machined at an angle to further improve the air extraction from the brakes. Just like the original Turbo-Fans.

Now not only do you have a stunning wheel with full length spokes, but you have a functioning turbo-fan effect without having to bolt on any additional parts to the wheel, or to obscure the design of the wheel itself. This results in a stronger, lighter and better looking wheel, while being totally functional.

Hi, are there any wind tunnel test videos to show the improvised cooling efficiency from the floating aero?
