The way we dress has a profound impact on how we think about ourselves and how others perceive us, yet there remains a disconnect between what we stand for and how our clothes are made. The scale and emotional power of the fashion industry uniquely position it to create a more equitable society.

Christian Birky started a pony-powered, zero-emissions lawn service at age 10. Now 25, he continues to explore how the choices we make can create a better world. He studied prison policy at Princeton before founding Lazlo, which hires former inmates to manufacture sustainable menswear in Detroit.

The issue is since inflation in the US is sky high and wages not increasing anywhere near the cost of living, Americans cannot afford to spend a lot on clothes, especially the cost of high quality clothes. Most sustainable clothing that is ethically produced and environmentally friendly is much more expensive. Yes, we can buy fewer quantity and better quality but clothing manufacturers in the US need to figure out how to lower costs in order to make quality, ethically made clothing made in the US more affordable for average American.

Ok, but, perhaps the building in Bangladesh collapsed due to poor construction. I believe core to the problem of cheap fashion that is manufactured the way it is, is that trends are changing every week. People who sew these things are not trendy. They wear their own comfortable clothes and they are not buying something new all the time.

I don't know that I'm willing to pay between $100 and $200 for a white cotton t-shirt.

Imagine feeling guilty for something you didn't even do.
Let's all be victims. Yay.
