India’s legal system is based on Common Law principles, which originated from British rule. The judicial system is hierarchical, with the Supreme Court of India at the top, followed by High Courts at the state level, and lower courts such as district courts and subordinate courts.

The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the land, and all laws must be in conformity with it. India has a bicameral legislature (Parliament), which enacts laws, and an independent judiciary that interprets and enforces them. The system ensures that the rights of individuals, especially minority groups, are protected under various fundamental rights and legal safeguards.

Indian law also emphasizes the rule of law, where justice is administered by impartial judges, and everyone is subject to the law, including government officials. Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has allowed ordinary citizens to challenge unconstitutional actions or practices in the courts, making the system more inclusive.
