A Dream Turned Into An Ever Evolving Reality
In 1960, Alex Jordan opened his dream house built atop a chimney of rock to the public. Over the years, Alex expanded his vision beyond the House and collected and built on a massive scale. What began as a lofty retreat with an awe-inspiring view has become a spectacular attraction known as The House on the Rock.

For over 60 years, the House on the Rock has been a majestic work in progress. It began in 1945 when a man named Alex Jordan had a towering goal: to build a man-made retreat as awe-inspiring as the view from the rock upon which the house would eventually be built. From that spark of imagination, the House on the Rock has evolved to include displays and collections of the exotic, the unusual, and the amazing that can be viewed as three separate tours.

I read Neil Gaiman’s book “American Gods” about 10 years ago. Some of the events in that book take place at The House On The Rock. I just realized about a month ago as I was re-reading “American Gods” that The House is a real place! Now, I’m dying to visit there!

I was trying to describe house on the rock to someone recently and found it hard to do (haven’t been since I was a kid). This video captures it beautifully!

Visited with my parents at least a couple of times as a kid growing up. Personally, my favorite part of walking through the House was going through the Streets Of Yesteryear and looking in all the shop windows. Also really enjoyed the music room. If I remember right, there was also a Chamber Of Horrors exhibit, which my Mom at first wouldn't allow me to look at. After pestering her, she finally gave in. Remembered it showed the ways people were tortured and killed through the ages, such as by the Guillotine, the Rack, etc. Mannequins were used to show the people being tortured/killed. Some had red paint on them representing blood, which was gory to a boy. Wonder if this exhibit is still on display? Overall, I enjoyed my visits, and am glad the House is still open and operating. Sadly, not too far from this was another tourist location, called Little Norway, which is no longer operating, with the buildings either torn down or moved.

Just revisited as an adult. This was probably the source of weird dreams I’ve had throughout my life, and probably much of my creativity.

I'm absolutely captivated by the serene beauty of Wisconsin that you've presented in this video – it's like a hidden oasis of peace. Thanks for highlighting the unexpected tranquility; it's inspiring me to visit and experience it first-hand.

We love the House on the Rock. Haven't been there in ten years, but we can't wait to get back.

I’m so glad I stop by here to learn more of the house of rock! There were so many interesting artifacts to look while on the tour. I really loved the orchestra. That was so cool.

Oh my goodness! There is so much to see - I could lose myself in that place. I liked the animatronics - the fortune teller and the band. Also loved the fancy carousel.

I was reading this book called American Rapture by CJ Leede and the characters in the book stop by "the house on the rock". The bizarre yet unique description of this place captured my curiosity. From the rooms that are too small to stand in, to the instruments that play by themselves, to the big blue whale, the angels in the ceiling, the carousel it just sounds like a place out of a dream. I had to see it for myself that such a place existed and I would love to go there personally.... maybe with someone special as well. I know my dad would find such a place interesting if he were still alive to see it. The number of special places we have gone together. 🥲

This brings back some great memories for me! I went to House on the Rock about 25-30 years ago when I lived in Wisconsin, but had forgotten so many of these great details about the house. I mostly remembered the stained glass and some odd structures. This makes me want to go back and see it again. I had totally forgotten about the Streets of Yesterday, The heritage of the sea, music of yesterday and the carousel. It's been so fun watching this and bringing back all those memories!

Really nice job with the way you filmed and edited this piece. We were just there for the Christmas Experience and it is a lot to take in. Thanks for the great video.
