Volleyball Net Height | Men vs Women, Youth | Future for Smaller & Senior Players?

The volleyball net is one of the few things we can't play volleyball without. But why is the net height different for men and women? I will share with you my opinion. Then there are situations where we could attract and keep more people in volleyball if we adjusted the height of the net for different groups of people.

I’m an 170 cm outside hitter and I always thought about the option to have lower nets set up for lower players. When you think about being fair, it’s super unfair to have lower players playing against higher players and the only thing we can do is to work on our jump technique, but it just work until certain level. Besides, as mentioned on the video, many young players with love and potential to play the sport end up giving up because they will never be considered to play on High School or College. Volleyball should have different categories based on players height, similar to boxe competitions based on fighter weigh.
We could have much more people playing the sport around the world and Volleyball would have much more presence on the sports panorama, then what we have today. It’s interesting that the FIVB never considered that as an expansion plan for the sport.
I also see a lot of prejudices from volleyball players that are not that tall and are often complaining about the net is being too low, even struggling with it themselves and preventing it to make them play in a better level.
What can we do, as volleyball community, to expresse this need and try to change that status quo?
Here in USA, I’ve already seen some amateur outdoor tournaments called “Hobbits”, for lower players. It seems to be a good start to bring up this conversation.

167 cm short guy here. Love spiking on outside and opposite, definitely a challenge at my height and I have a decent but not super high jump. I've got a good and consistent top-spin jump serve as well. It's tough, I love the challenge at proving people wrong at my height but the struggle is real. I by chance happened to play at an open gym where they have the net at women's height, and it almost felt like cheating. Lol I imagine that's what it's like being a giant. But I think that height would be too low, maybe closer to but slightly below 2.43m. The bigger difference would be to have the short person league with that cap at 185 cm or so. Have you seen Coach Donny with the Tall Ones at Elevate Yourself? I really enjoy watching them play since they're a lot shorter than average, though I'm still a little shorter. But they've definitely inspired me to push myself.

5:43 - So say if im 183cm. What are the realistic chances i can play professional vball as an outside or opposite hitter? Also when we talk about player heights, does that include their shoes?

my height is 171cm. but with my jump. I can touch and grip a basketball hoop. that is 305 cm tall. that means I can hit the ball above the net and that was enough for me to do back row attack. can that be a reason for me to be able to participate in volleyball tournaments like at the professional level?. because a lot people said that to be a spiker you height must reach 180cm or 200cm above.

Why don't thet just create a smaller competition for men?

Recreational volleyball is jungle ball, it's not volleyball. Recruiting those players, by lowering the net, will ruin the sport. The standard net height serves as a weeding out process for the sport. If you don't have the athleticism to play volleyball, then go play pickleball.
