The Life of a Broiler Chicken

This is the sad reality for approximately 664,000,000 chickens in Australia.

In just seven weeks they reach their slaughter weight of ~2.52kg.

Quite amazing for them to be able to identify which chicken is Charlie throughout all the weeks.

Understand, this breed of chicken…. Cornish cross that I raised is ready to butcher at 7-9 weeks of age. They are so heavy they can barely walk. I put mine out in the grass for some free range time. They waddled the 30 feet back to the feeder to sit in front of it. My home raised chickens were no tastier than store bought, the kill/butcher day wasn’t much fun. I got no satisfaction or pleasure from it. So, unless your a vegetarian who never eats meat you need to understand that commercial meat production keeps blood off our hands so we can pretend we’re virtuous, loving and wonderful people. I’m going to continue to eat meat but I will not be raising animals for my own consumption. Until you have raised animals to kill and slaughter you have no understanding of the breeds and the process. Oh, and it was the most expensive chicken I’ve ever bought…. So there was no savings there either. Maybe if I breeded chickens to raise for slaughter I might be able to break the cost down. Otherwise I had about $25 in each chicken.

They're only babies who should be with their mummy, not in an overcrowded shed and certainly not experiencing a slaughterhouse at 6 weeks, if ever.

This is sad this year i have 2 broilers and i rasied them very well the day my Mom said that they need to be slaughtered and i cried so hard compare to other chicken's who can spend their life for 10 years not like these :(

If I were able to sneak in to the farm or whatever this chickens are at I will try to break the wall open so the chickens will be free of suffering and have their best lives

Poor chickens I mean yea we can eat them but don't put them in a confined space for all their life I had broiler chickens ate 3 out of the 5 and let them have the best of their lives before they went away

Broiler chickens are selectively bred to grow super fast, for meat production. Their diet also excludes extra calcium as they are not raised for eggs.

Their 5 week of experience and lack of other reference experience means that they won’t really be that upset, unlike humans who live long lives and would have experienced both good and bad.

Trying to project your own experience onto them, or anthromophosize these broiler chicken is but social justice parading to mask unfounded guilt.

If they were subject to daily beatings, physical labor, starved, sexual abuse, social humiliation, then yes, that would be something wrong.

Lack of provision of intellectual stimulation however, I.e providing PlayStation or fancy gyms/spas/touring vacation equivalents on the other hand, is not abuse.

Depriving them of predator stress should also not be considered abuse.

A chicken left in the wild doesn’t cultivate the field or garden it lives in, it uses it to hide from predator, and go about eating and copulating. It doesn’t usually participate in play behavior either.

Being exposed to danger, there is a necessity for the mother to rear the chicks til they achieve sufficient independence. Even so, the chicks and chicken can get killed by wild animals like foxes.

If all life is equal, then so are insects and ‘pests’ like rats and cockroaches. They get abused, trapped, poisoned, shot, killed, brutalized in all sorts of ways. Warfarin essentially cause rats to bleed out internally and die. Why not post videos on actual animal abuse?

Life isn’t equal, many humans suffer more than these broiler chickens. In fact, the broiler chickens look fine and not stressed. They perhaps look a little bored and ugly from how their genetics have been selected for, but they haven’t been beaten daily or have been subjected to other such abuse.

That's why I minimized my meat consumption. We shouldn't forget that WE could be those poor chicken. We were born as humans for some mystery reasons but we could be born as cows or birds instead. And ask yourself: if you would be born as a chicken, would you like this "life"?

This is the demand we humans place on farmers for very affordable meat. And the demand we have for chicken nuggets always tasting the same.

As a small chicken farmer myself, I can say it's far less expensive to by chicken at a store than to raise them, on a small scale at home.

I don't agree with how these commercial chicken farmers raise their meat birds; actually, I find it inhumane. But some may find my way of raising chickens inhumane as well. I don't free range them...don't have the space; rather, I put them in a chicken tracker and move them on fresh grass daily. It's a lot of work but worth it. At least my chicken get fresh air, sunshine, water, grass and bugs daily. Not to mention treats. : )

More people would be vegetarians if they had to butcher their own meat.
