Her Majesty the Queen has officially named the UK's newest aircraft carrier today at Rosyth, near Edinburgh, in a spectacular ceremony celebrating British naval capability. Recognising the strategic importance of HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH, the Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Defence and First Sea Lord joined the celebrations, along with allies from around the world and more than 3,500 people involved in the design and construction of the largest warship ever built in the UK.

It is a really fine looking ship, but why did they heavily rely in the F-35B? The F-35C has more capability. If they intend this carriers to act as power projection ships like US and French carrier do, they should've opted for catapult launch rather than sky ramp. It will enable the operations of F-35 C which can carry more fuel and payload, more suited for strike missions than the F-35 B.

Everyone who bought into the F-35 was dumb but the UK screwed themselves harder than anyone else. By building a warship designed to operate an unproven fighter that currently isn't providing promised performance. And even worse than that they built a ship larger than the French CdG yet still chose to make it STOVL.

How does having two islands increase deck space and improve visibility? That claim doesn’t pass the “smell tests, as those factors were two reasons why carriers historically had a single island.

These are to defend the Falklands and it's huge oil reserves - We don't need them anywhere else. The UK already has the largest aircraft carrier in the world permanently stationed not far off the the middle-east coast

As aAmerican I don't think a warship like that would benefit from having to islands because two islands the one island will take up too much space you could add two or three or four more f-35 and that could be crucial you're taking up deck space line on make everything into one command post tower
