SUPboarder quick SUP tip / Which way is the wind blowing?

In this SUPboarder quick SUP tip we explain how you can use anchored/moored boats to find out which way the wind is blowing. Boats will generally point in the direction the wind is coming from (with the exception when boats are in strong tidal areas). Knowing which way the wind is blowing as well as wind strength is really important to ensure your safety out on the water. By not considering wind direction you and your SUP could easily be blown out to sea or be unable to paddle back to your planned landing location.

Great that you mentioned tides as well. Where I usually paddle, tide determines where the boats point. Love Will’s one piece Black Project paddle there!

When looking at the boats, see if they have masthead mounted wind vanes (or flags), and look at the direction they are pointing - that way the tide/current influence on the hull of the boat is eliminated.
