part of me can't help thinking it would have been fun if it turned out that the Dad was a notorious bad-guy.

But that's just my frustration that Gru gave up being a bad guy for the girls. It would have been a lot more fun if he was a loving dad, who just happened to be a super-villain. Agnes would have kicked ass as a wanna-be bad-girl Gru had to keep an eye on from the shadows.
