Anya Taylor-Joy says filming Mad Max movie unlocked her 'feminine rage'

Anya Taylor-Joy revealed that filming the apocalyptic movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga helped her discover her "feminine rage." The 28-year-old actress, promoting the film in Cannes, said playing the lead role transformed her personally, teaching her to stand up for herself.

In GQ magazine, Anya explained that although she champions female rage, she wasn't an angry person before. She usually got angry on others' behalf and felt she was the problem when treated badly. The role of Furiosa allowed her to feel anger for herself, which she is grateful for.

Anya, who grew up in the UK after being born in the US, described her tough childhood, feeling like an outsider. She would retreat into books or nature to cope. At school, she was often told everything about her was wrong, partly due to her appearance and intense personality.

She learned to be self-deprecating as a survival mechanism but now believes in standing her ground as long as she doesn't harm others.

Last month, Anya, known for her role in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, confirmed she secretly married Malcolm McRae two years ago in New Orleans.
