Almost everything about the Samurai except for the time period in which they operated, is mythology perpetuated by the Samurai and their later-in-history cheerleaders. Often times, they were little more than gangsters who bulled local townsfolk, and didn't even live by their own code of honor (which wasn't even written down until hundreds of years later.)
