In 2022, Facebook researchers released an AI that shook the tech community. It was previously thought to be impossible. But this AI defeated humans in a special game. A game that closely mimics real life politics. A game called Diplomacy.

But why is Diplomacy the ultimate test?

This is a game where you take the role of one of the leaders of Europe, before World War 1. The goal is to take control of Europe with your armies. But you can't work alone. The winner is often the player who's the best at winning the trust of others, before betraying them.

And that's exactly what this AI is an expert at.

CICERO, ranks in the top 10% of online players. The main reason is that humans found AI more trustworthy than humans. And they thought they were talking with a human. So CICERO formed and broke partnerships faster. Now, this sounds like the start of a sci-fi story that ends badly for humans.

I played this game in Varsity for a business management course. My lecturer who was privy to all the conversations says that everyone was just waiting on the most optimal time to screw the other team but when I represent my team they trusted me not to screw them over because I had the actions and behaviors of a trustworthy person. Some good that has done me. I’m broke and the guy who they believe would screw them over is a multimillionaire.
